back pain

Hello all-

So I am having severe back pain. I was pretty sure I pulled a muscle coughing but now am not so sure. The pain is to the right of my spine a little and where my belly button would be but in the back. It hurts all the time and it hurts to touch. I can't move because it hurts so much. It was hurting a little all week but I woke up in the night and Wed. and was sobbing it hurt so much. I was prescribed flexerol, a muscle relaxant, and it did nothing. I was prescribed codeine to take with the flexerol and it did nothing. I iced it and then put moist heat on it, all nothing.

Any ideas of what it could be, or what I can do to be able to work through it?

Hi Sue,
I've never had pain like that but ususally when I hurt somewhere I get in the hot tub. Or hot bath tub. Sometimes just 'soaking' makes me feel better. I'll stay in the tub for 1/2 hour.
I'd go back to your dr to double check things, or maybe get an Xray or something.
Sometimes when I'm in pain, I'll go to the chiropractor. He can usually help since all the bones/muscles work together.
I also have a rice bag that I put in the microwave, the moist heat really helps.
Or maybe an Icy Hot rub would help. Cool then hot.

It is to the right of my spine, a little higher than where my belly button would be if it was in the back. I tried to put heat on it but it is doing nothing. It hurts even when anything touches it. It just hurts so much and nothing is working

OK I have had a pain in that similar area. It felt like a neve was being pinched and it hurt to touch or move. I ended up going to the chiropractor. I dont have any idea if iyours is the same so I thought I would at least mention it. Let me tell you that although the initial appt hurt like hell because of the tenderness to touch, I felt an instant relief. Occaisionally it flares up usually during a lot of coughing etc.

I am not real sure about your pain, but it sounds like you are describing pain in your flank area.. is it kind of where your kidneys are? I am wondering if maybe it is a kidney stone? Or is it spinal pain?

I don't have any answers for you as far as what helps with the pain... For me when my joints are sore, nothing makes them better.. I just have to ride it out.. Hot baths will give a few minute reprive.

Is it definitely on the outside? I would get pains there when I had gallstones- that's the only pain I've ever had (I was 16) that made me go crawl in the bed with my parents in the middle of the night to tell them I was hurting.
