Bedroom air quality help....

PLEASE don't use the air purifiers that clean the air using ions. The ionizing function breaks apart molecules (turning them into unpaired electrons called ions) that are the basic for most bacterial odors. Although they are very effective at removing odors, they are notorious for generating ground level ozone. Ground level ozone can cause a reduction in lung function.

People with allergies and CF should look into HEPA filter systems. My personal and professional choice for an air filter is the Bionaire Tower. It is very efficient; the price is great; it's far and away the quietest air filter I've found for its size. My favorite features are that it oscillates (which means it is able to do an even better job of moving the air) and it has a remote control.

SEARS has two different sizes of the Bionaire HEPA tower. They both have an independent ionization function, which, for the most part I leave turned off. The only time I had the ionizer switched on was when we first moved into our new house and the air conditioner wasn't installed yet. Since our windows were open a lot of the time for ventilation, I ran the filter with the ionizer on (while I was out of the room) to break down the emissions from passing cars (we live on a busy street.

I am exceptionally pleased with the Bionaire product. I have researched air filters and purifiers for a number of years now, and this one has the technology and aesthetics that I deem acceptable.

</a>

I have 2 of these units. One for upstairs and one for downstairs. So far so good.

Oh, and another thing I use to help keep the bedroom dust-free is that "Endust" stuff. I think it has teflon in it or something to repel dust. Combine that with the air filter and I'm no longer hacking and wheezing during the night.

We have the Honeywell Air Purifyer and LOVE it! Bought it for dd but now we all have one in our bedroom!

I also bought a vaccum that has a HEPA filter in it and feel like it helps too! Keeping the dust away is impossible!

We are remodeling right now and have to get a new heating and air unit. He asked if we wanted a hepa filter on it. After reading on these forums - I said definetly. We can get the Hepa filter for a little extra. So if we get this we wouldn't need the room filters, right?? He knows Tanner has CF so he thought we would want it. You change the 2 filters on it every 3 months or so.

We have a whirlpool whispersure. Think it was one of the highest rated ones. Was a gift from a relative shortly after DS was born. There's a prefilter that is changed every 3 months and a hepa filter once a year. The hepa filter is spendy -- about $95. The prefilters run about $45 for a package of 4. Really seems to make ds's room smell fresh and the horrible, horrible gunk that comes out when changing filters -- ewwwww! Where does it all come from?
