Bedtime in Hospital--??

Ok, I need to know if I'm really as odd as the nurses are implying.

My kids all go to bed around 8-8:30PM at home.

While we are in the hospital, I am trying to start bedtime process by this time and lights-out in our room by 9 (he is only 6).

For some reason, the nurses & RT's keep showing up at 9:30 or last night I had a nurse at 10:10 and saying "wow, going to be early??". When I point out 10PM is not early for a 6yr old they use the excuse that kids stay up late in the hospital.

Obviously things are flexible, but he is getting iv meds at midnight & 6am so I figure getting to bed normally is a good thing.

So my question is do you really let your kids stay up all night just because they are in the hospital?

Usually my kids go to bed at 9:00 p.m. at home. In the hospital it is the same, usually we play a movie and he falls asleep until they start coming in all hours of the night. You can't get rest in the hospital.

I think there are many more kids then you realize staying up. Whether they are CFers is another story. I also believe that like in our hospital....routien nighttime meds are done at 10pm so I could never get to sleep before that.

I finally asked that my doctor put orders in for it to be done at 9 (earlier would be harder with shift change etc) that way my night time sugars, vitals & meds are done with the hopes of being asleep at 10pm instead of just starting things.

I would talk to the doctor & tell them how important a routine is for M (tho they should realize that in general) & ask for the Nurses to do their thing early....

OR just put a note on the door!

I got quite a response when I put the note up!

As to the routine or scheduling of meds.....a good nurse will do what it takes to administer that med without waking the patient. When I use to get disconnected between meds (pre continuous fluid at my request) it was a bit more difficult. I often would be laying on the connection spot & they couldnt reach it. That eased a lot when I had continuous fluid.

There are ways.....put your mind to work, request it & push it!

Well they do is bedtime meds at 8ish, so it is normally just vitals or something showing up late. Shift change is at 7 fyi.

Or one night RT got busy and got behind (ok, it happens).

My thing was not that they have to do things, but i was surprised they were surprised I wasn't letting him stay up till midnight.

Mel, i actually tried the note idea for rest-time yesterday and it worked, we got an hour w/o interuptions so I love the idea (got it from here in the past).
