Before you vote for Kerry...Get The Truth About Stem Cells

New member
George Bush is the first president to approve federal funding for stem cell research. There are 22 lines of stem cells now available, up from one just two years ago. As Leon Kass, head of the President's Council on Bioethics, has written, there are 3,500 shipments of stem cells waiting for anybody who wants them.

Edwards and Kerry constantly talk of a Bush "ban" on stem cell research. This is false. There is no ban. You want to study stem cells? You get them from the companies that have the cells and apply to the National Institutes of Health for the federal funding.

I don't want to start a political debate here, but since it is related to CF, I'll bite...

"In 1999 and 2000, researchers began to find that manipulation of adult mouse tissues could sometimes yield previously unsuspected cell types; for example, that some bone marrow cells could be turned into nerve or liver cells and that stem cells found in the brain appear to be able to form other kinds of cells." From the Lasker Medical Research Foundation

The basics of stem cell research were disacovered in the 1800's. But, since this research wasn't really in full swing or showing real promise, until at least 2000, then isn't it kind of silly to tout Bush's limp support for this issue as great because he is the "only President to commit federal funds"? He was the only one to have a genuine opportunity to do so.

Many research scientists believe that the stem cells currently available are not all functionally useful for all types of research due to purity concerns, etc...

Bush has set a limit...and by the way, only agreed to that compromise after a lot of convincing. Kerry does not intend to limit it in any way.

I don't support human cloning (which is a by-product of this research that many fear) but setting arbitrary limits (only existing lines) that restrict this research in any way is wrong. There is too much that could possibly be gained. We never know unless all our best scientisists can give it a full and unrestricted (in any way) effort.

Not sure, but aren't the stem cells that can be removed from an embryo much more useful to research then adult stem cells. So if embryonic stem cells are not able to be produced any more than aren't we greatly limiting research?

To the last poster, yes, embryonic stem cells are far more useful than adult cells BUT it is IMMORAL to create embryos for the sole purpose of science!! And to the previous poster, creating embryos just for science sake is not too far off from cloning - just give it a couple years.

While I agree it isn't a big leap from creating stem cells "for science" to cloning, that is somewhat of a false premise.

Embryonic stem cells created through fertility clinics would provide an ample supply. They aren't being created for the stem cell research, they are by-products of the process of creating a new life that would be destroyed anyway. I think of it somewhat in the same way as I do organ donation. It is a shame to let it something of value go to waste.

Bush has restricted stem cell research to those stem cell lines created before August 9, 2001. Many of these stem cells are useless from being improperly stored, and there are only so many available. Chances are, there are so few stem cells available for research that any research done with them will be imcomplete and not helpful under Bush's guidelines for research.

Kerry supports stem cell research. This is not to say that he will just say to scientists "Go ahead and breed embryos for research, do whatever you want." In any medical research, there are guidelines/laws in place to ensure that the research is as ethical, moral and fair as possible, and Kerry will enforce these on stem cell research. Because the research holds the potential to lead to cloning, or breeding of embryos for research does not mean it shouldn't be supported fully. Kerry wants more stem cell lines to be allowed to be used for research- like the thousands upon thousands currently sitting in freezers at fertility clinics nationwide, untouched. Like the previous post said, it is a shame to let something of value go to waste.

Stem cells are a very complex issue especially when you start looking at the questions regarding ethics. I would like to point out that President Bush wanted to "double" the National Institutes of Health annual budget to 30 billion dollars. Today, the National Institutes of Health budget has reached 28 billion dollars under President Bush, which is almost double.

Stem cells are an important issue, but only one of many issues regarding research. The increase to 28 billion dollars annually will be an incredible boost for cystic fibrosis research in many areas.

If you like President Bush then vote, if you like John Kerry then vote. President Bush has done a great deal to support research by increasing funding for the National Institutes of Health by almost double.

For whoever wrote this post....
For stem cell research, EMBRYOS ARE NOT CREATED FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF SCIENCE.Embryonic stem cells are derived from fertilized eggs frozen for IVF.....if they are not used for research they are THROWN AWAY. Please take a minute to learn about stem cell research from the NIH.

I'm going to borrow a quote from Michael J. Fox(who suffers from Parkinsons Disease) regarding George W. Bush and stem cells.

"It's like George W. Bush gave you a brand new car but didn't give you any gas or tires for it. And then he thanked himself for giving you the car"

I think this sums it up perfectly. Bush wants people who support stem cell research to think he supports it too but he doesn't. He's letting the gov't use what is currently available but he won't support or fund it once those are gone. We need more than that.

President George Bush gave an additional 18 billion dollars annually to the National Institutes of Health to increase research across the board (thats alot of gas). The National Institutes of Health 2004 cystic fibrosis research fund sits at just above 124.0 million. Stems cells are one area of research.

No matter how much money Bush allotted for the NIH, he still is not allowing the use of embryonic stem cells for research, which are much more plentiful and useful than adult stem cells. That's the bottom line!

President Bush is allowing stem cell research with regards to the stem cell lines that were already compromised and funding this. Private companies or public companies can study stem cells all they want ie. Pfizer, Chiron, Genentech, Sandoz etc.......Email Pfizer who spent 5 billion dollars in research and development for the 2004 year and ask them if they are researching stem cells?

From all of the research that I have heard. The most viable and scientifically helpful stem cells are the adult stem cells harvested from cord blood and bone marrow. A large percentage of the embryonic stem cells are not viable and turn into tumors.

Kerry tells you what you want to hear! Make sure you look at his record in the Senate! He was their for 20 years and I've seen nothing.

"John Kerry talks about making life better, but he voted for higher taxes on gas. He voted for higher taxes on Social Security benefits. He even voted for higher taxes on our children and our marriages. He has a 20 year record of votes that would weaken our national security, and all the campaign camouflage in the world can't obscure Kerry's record of being wrong for American women and their families."

In 2000, Kerry Voted In Favor Of Permanent Normal Trade Relations With China. Now Kerry Criticizes The Bush Administration For Trading With China. “He said on Monday Americans workers were paying the price for President Bush's weak stance on trade with China and other countries. … On the bus tour, Kerry singled out the Bush administration's handling of trade with China and said that country was manipulating its currency.”
BUT HE VOTED FOR IT!
