Black Hairy Tongue!!!???

This is one of the wierdest "side effects" I've had....black tongue! My tongue felt kinda funny this weekend and I happened to look in the mirror yesterday and stuck out my tongue to look at it. OMG...it was black! Gross! I got a little freaked, but I googled it and found out it is harmless and is associated with antibiotic use. I'd never had this happen before & never even heard of it!

Anybody else ever have this happen?

I finished a 28 day course of clindamycin last week and began a tobramycin nasal flush a couple days afterwards.

I was devastated the first time our daughter had a black tongue (2 years old).

I was still learning about CF and thought it might be a symptom of something awful.

It turned out to be Pepto Bismol she took the night before. The black color happens when you don't drink or rinse your mouth after taking it.

Try Biotene mouthwash. That takes away and keeps all the nasty bugs away in my mouth. It took my thrush away and I am sure it will turn your tongue back to pink. You can buy them at any walgreens. I also use the toothpaste.

amysmom: It looks truly awful doesn't it? I was so relieved to find out it was rather common and not serious.

Risa: Thank you. I will look for the Biotene.

I started taking probiotics yesterday as well to see if that may help it clear up quicker.
