amysmom: It looks truly awful doesn't it? I was so relieved to find out it was rather common and not serious.

Risa: Thank you. I will look for the Biotene.

I started taking probiotics yesterday as well to see if that may help it clear up quicker.

Is the black tongue a form of thrush? This year I started taking clotrimozole (sp?) lozenges while on IV antibiotics and I haven't had a case of thrush yet this year! They don't taste bad (kinda tasteless) and I take just 3x/day only while on IVs or oral ABS. I had serious thrush probs before I started these lozenges. Ask your CF doc for an Rx.

Tara, I'm not really sure. This is what the article I read said:

"Patients with hairy tongue often may develop a secondary infection of Candida albicans (thrush). It is unclear if hairy tongue itself is a predisposing factor, as the underlying causes of hairy tongue may also lead to the development of thrush."

I'll be sure to ask my dr about the clotrimozole. It's been about 20 years since I had thrush brought on by an antibiotic.

I feel as though my body is reacting differently to meds as I get older.
