blockage but pancreatic sufficient

Alyssa

New member
My daughter is pancreatic sufficient - we have never dealt with digestion or enzyme issues.

She was at the urologist so he could take a look at her x-ray for a kidney stone, when he pointed out that he could not see her kidney because she was constipated.

She didn't "feel" constipated at the time, and also always has regular bowel movements at least once a day so my questions are:

1) do pancreatic sufficient people get blockages?

2) is a "mild" blockage just constipation?

3) if you get a blockage, do you still have bowel movements -- does
some stuff get by while some of it gets stuck in a particular area?

4) what typically causes blockages in pwcf?

Thanks everyone !

I'm not sure about the pancreactic question, so I won't comment. But, I have had 4-5 blockages in my life. I don't think that mild constipation qualifies as a blockage.
A blockage can be either an obstruction (compacted feces), or in severe cases an actual tie, twist, or loop in the intestines.
Most people with Blockages don't have bowel movements. I know the one thing they always asked me was if I was passing any gas. If I was, I knew that fixing the blockage would be a little easier for me. If I wasn't gassing, obviously it was worse.
One of the signs they always told me was to watch for the consistency and shape of my bowel movements.

Sorry to get gross-but I don't think I can avoid it!

If you're poop is coming out in small pieces, or what they call "pencils" (thin strips)-it's not a good sign. That means that you could be developing a block, but haven't fully developed it yet. My problem as a child was that I'd never tell my mom when this was happeining, and they'd develop into full out blocks.

I always insisted to my mom that I took my enzymes as a child-when I missed them alot! Then one time, at a doctor's visit, my pediatrician said to my mother: Intestinal Blockages are caused by three things. 1.Not taking enzymes. 2.Not taking enzymes or 3. Not taking enzymes.

He was wise to me! Of course that can also mean not taking enough enzymes, or taking the wrong ones.

I hope you get some answers!

It's very easy (and probably correct) to equate CF with gross. So poop talk is expected around here. Hahaha.

This happens to me kind of often, but I have yet in my life to form a block other than the ileus when I was born. Any ideas on what that means?

Hi Emily,

Maybe it means you 're just not getting all the nutrients from what you're eating. We're all different after all. I get the gross "pencils" too, and don't get a block all the time. But, I know I'm not absorbing the vitamins out of my food.

Do you struggle with your weight?

My weight's never been a real problem. I lost 15 lbs the end of last year, but when I made a conscious effort to put it back on, I gained 10 back in like 2 months.

That's another weird thing. I have plenty of bathroom troubles, but can keep my weight up with little struggle. Isn't that kind of contradictory?

I'm with you there Emily but from the other side of the spectrum! I have no bathroom problems at all. No stomach pain, no gas, no indigestion, no bloat, flat stomach. Perfectly formed, odourless, rich brown coloured sinkers (haha this really is a gross subject, the only other breed of people that seem to discuss bowel movements this much are travellers!). BUT my nickname is scrawny and hell I am! I'm 1.70 metres tall and weigh about 50kg (105 pounds approx) and it is really an effort for me to gain anymore weight, i'm actually at the fattest i've been in many years. It just doesn't make any sense to me and I'm glad i'm not alone here! My dream in life is to one day have breasts, thighs and a bum!
