Blood Donation..

So today, my dear, dear friend who is way more amazing to me then I could ever be to her.(and i mean that honestly... I have a lot of friends but very few who put me before them on a regular basis.. she is one of those friends) anyway shee had her husband go and donate blood for me, on my account.. I have a number that people who give blood have to give so that it gets assigned to me.

Anyway, as I was setting up the account and double triple checking on things.. the women from the blood bank asked me if I was aware of the fees.....I was so surpised that their was a donation fee.. Yup sure enough... $160.00 a unit.... That is how much they were going to charge her husband for taking off work.being as kind hearted as someone can be... uggg . He is captain of the police department and he took time out of his really busy schedule to do this.. and anyone who knows me, knows I am horrified at the thought of putting someone out, inconviencing them or even asking for simple requests from them so this was really hard on me....

They told me the fee is because it was being designated to my name... Unbelievable to me...... I quickly game them my credit card and made it clear to NEVER charge anyone that is giving blood in my name and to always use my card but still I don't get the fee..

You would think they would pay me.. I am drumming up business for them... I am NOT taking their blood out of their precious little supply and yet.. I have to pay for the donation.. I would have been charged nothing if I would have taken their blood from a donor out of the bank..

Well I would have had to pay the same transfussion fee etc... but when you get it in your name.. you have to pay a fee... I call it a finders fee.. and then pay all the other fees that they bill the insurance..

Good thing for me only one person donated.....I will get one unit of blood from him.. and the rest will be donor.. THough my birthday is on Thursday.. I may ask for blood as birthday presents for me from my friends....

Actually I would be really happy with getting blood as a birthday present.

This forum will be filled with wishes for you. I think about you all the time, wishing nothing but the best as you prepare for your surgery. I see you haven't lost your sense of humor, and that is a good thing. Thanks for keeping us posted on all the ins and outs of getting ready for your big day. I'll keep wishing for all good things for you.

I could not believe it when I read your post! Charging for a donation! Talk about bordering on the ridiculous! I think you should write a letter to your newpaper editor about this.

I am TOTALLY assuming that it is because it was designated for you. My sis donates (in general not just for me) on a regular basis & never had to pay for it. Even so....the fact that you wouldnt have to draw fromt he general blood bank should be reason enough not to charge. Does it take special processing &/or extra record keeping...yes I am sure. Point still remains that they are saving the other blood for someone else! Is this in NJ? I am just curious now as to who instituted the fee!

Yikes -- In high school and college the local blood bank had a program when we donated blood, we could do so in someone's name thru our church. We had a list of church members and every time we donated, it would be put in someone's name. So over a two year period if that person needed blood, they wouldn't be charged. It wouldn't necessarily be blood set aside -- they just wouldn't have to pay for it. This was a regional blood bank. So every 8 weeks, the blood bank would get blood from me and I'd cover a friend or family member. Never had need of the service, but was a nice perk.

Where I live now it's a national blood bank -- United. They collect the blood and it's distributed locally, nationally.... You can still make arrangements to stockpile your own blood -- donate prior to a procedure or have family members donate. Not sure it there's a fee.

I'll admit I haven't been very great about donating in recent years -- it takes me at least half an hour to get there and back from work and with increased questions, screening, etc. I'm there for about an hour. If they call and say they need my blood type, I will donate, but it's not like in the past when I'd give on a regular basis. I know I should donate more but I have rolly veins and time and time again I get tortured. Unlike the place where I used to give in high school, this place doesn't use med techs and tend to have a LOT of newbies experimenting on me. Plus I feel a bit put out that my blood isn't staying locally. L

That is ridiculous -- how do they expect to get more kind hearted
souls come out and donate for friends and family when it could be a
financial burden???  I've never heard of such a thing!!!
