One of my 13 year olds has had a stomach ache for the last couple of hours. He has had 2 bms today, both being diherrea. The last time he said he thought he seen spots of red in it. Could this be blood? Has anyone else had this problem or know what can cause it? Should I take him to emergency? He seems a little livlier since his last bm, he had a fever earlier but it went with tylenol. He has been extremely tired this evening. Should I be worried? Thanks in advance.

I would call the doctor to be sure. My husband had some blood in his stools--but looked "tar" like not red--and it was internal bleeding from his esphogus. He ended up having surgery to stop it, etc. Because it could be so serious I would err on the side of caution and call or go in. If you call you can describe what it looks like and waht is going on, etc. and get a better idea of what you need to do. I hope that he is well!

My son had this both when he was about 4 and when he was a teen.
When he was younger, it was caused from rectal prolapse.
When he was a teen, it was caused from not taking his enymes the way he should...

Sometimes if you strain, it can be a broken blood vessel, I would definitely try to get a sample the next time--(I know gross), and take it in. But you need a doctor's order to have the lab sample it for blood...You can actually refig it and take it in next day--I know that is gross too!
