Blood Transfusions

Has anyone needed a blood transfusion? I was thinking more from severe hemoptysis, but for any reason would be of interest. I remember one time when I was young that I had a bad bout of hemoptysis & my Mom was told they might have to do a transfusion. She was asked if she wanted to use from their blood bank or try for a family donation. She opted for the family, but fortunately I never needed it.

Both of my boys had blood transfusions when they were three months old, just before they were diagnosed with cf. They were severley anemic and had low albumin, their feet and hands were really swollen also. It wasnt due to hemoptysis, although one of them had problems with that last year. At the time they both also had a lot of breathing problems, were malnurished and had urinary tract infections, as I said it was before they were diagnosed with cf.

I have never had a transfussion and I never want one.. As the world knows I am having surgery on October 19th, and the surgeon told me I am going to need 2-4 units of blood.. I told him I really don't want the blood.. not for Religious reasons but it has always creeped me out a lot... As a nurse, I have hung blood. .... and it freaks me out..... I should know better but I don't.....

I was going to have friends donate..but it really is a lot of trouble and I don't want to bother them.. even though they alll said they would...when I said I needed it... I just changed my mind.....

So that being said.. I may have to get blood if it comes down to it.. but I am really hoping not....

Hi Melissa,

I had 2 blood transfusions (back to back) in 2001. I was in severe kidney failure, on dialysis, and they needed to clean out my toxic blood. There wasn't time for my mom to donate or anything like that, so I received the hospital's blood from storage. It all went fine and they reassured me of all the precautions and measures they go through to make sure it's safe and clean blood. I felt okay about it and it went well.

It's a strange feeling, but nothing bad. Hope that helps.

I have had two transfusions. Ones when i was 11, i was very tired, and my legs started to swell. They found out i had low Albumine in my blood so i needed a transfusion.
And i had one unit in ICU after my transplant, just recently.

I had a transfusion back in the 80's. They did not know if it was from being so ill or a reaction to a medication. At the time I was in the hospital for a tune up and was really sick.
