boiling my nebs

I tried boiling my nebs for the first time ever, figured it might have had some gunk built up in it since I dont clean it all that much. Well I threw it in a pot with some hot water and soap, let it boil for about a min, and then took it out. Lets just say plastic does not work well with boiling water. The tube part was all twisted in distorted, I was able to bend it a little bit, but it still is kinda awkward. The part that u put the medicine in no longer screws onto the air tube, and the mouth piece will not stay in the tube anymore. I am still able to do the neb, I just have to hold the thing together while doing it, but I dont think its as effective because it felt like alot of normal air was mixed in with it, also I think there was some soap left in it because the air smelled like soap, is it a bad thing to inhale liquid soap through it? I am stuck with this neb until monday when i go back to visit my dad, he has an extra 1 there I think. Any advice when boiling, cleaning my nebs? And is it really nessacary? Because if its not that big of a deal then I just wont clean it. Also are all neb mouth pieces the same, because the 1 my dad has is like 5 or 6 years old...is that an out of date model that wont be as effective as a newer 1?

Sory, theres alot of questions built into that 1 paragraph.

This current thread will help answer your concerns about cleaning nebs. Also are you boiling your tubing? The part that goes from the neb cup to the compressor? Tubing is not cleaned but replaced at least every 6 months. If you find condensation in the tubing after your treatments then run your compressor for a few minutes to dry it out. When you go to the doctor ask if you can have extra nebs. Many times they will give them to you. If not maybe you could purchase several so you have them on hand and this way you wouldn't have to clean it right away after each treatment but maybe once a day or every other.

Ya you're not supposed to boil your tubing.

And when you boil your nebs, it should be with just plain water. Wash the nebs with soap before boiling

What type of nebs do you have? Not all can be boiled. And I'd get an updated one for your dad's that is 5-6 years old. The newer nebs do deliver more medication into your lungs and often over a shorter period of time.

It's important to clean and boil your nebs because bacteria will grow on the nebs (from your lungs and normal bacteria that grows naturally on damp areas) and you will re-infect your lungs with the bacteria when you re-use the nebs. Boil after every treatment.

I have medela sterilizer bags for my breastpumping supplies. Decided to use them on day on Mark's nebulizers and they work wonders!!!!

I still clean his nebs with hot water and soap (blue dawn dish soap is what is recommended for my pumping supplies so I used it for his nebs too). I actually dump the neb parts into a little bucket in the sink and fill it up with hot water and the soap. About 30min later, I wash them out (sometimes using a bottle brush, which we just happen to have-go figure ) to get the small parts) put them in the medela sterilizer bag, add 2oz of water to the bag, put in the microwave for 3 minutes and I'm done.

A box of 5 bags is about $5 and you can use each bag for 20 times, (although I've gotten about 30 uses before I discard)

Call it overkill but I boil mine & then give'em a good soaking in alcohol while their still hot, the heat from boiling helps dry the alcohol quickly
