Breaking a rib while coughing

Ugh...sorry to hear that Steve. I fractured a rib a few years ago...so painful. It took about 2-3 weeks for the pain to start to go away. I was doing manual PT at the time, not the vest so I tried to just work around it as best I could. I found that a heating pad worked better than ice to ease the pain.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

I cracked a rib or separated the muscles (we never were sure which, since I was pregnant at the time). Coughing was extremely painful and I gave up the vest for percussor for a while. Taking care of the cause of the cracked rib (lung exacerbation) was the most helpful. I was also on Tylenol with Codeine for the pain. It got much more tolerable after a week and was gone after about two.

Thanks for all the feedback. Seems like I'll just have to live with it for a few weeks at least...I did find that, while the pillow didn't help too much, pushing in on my rib cage with my hand while coughing did provide a little relief. The pain is more associated with expansion than compression...whatever...gaahhh anyone know where I can score some opium...<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

About 3 years ago I had the same thing happen to me while I was doing my HTS as well. I thought I had broken a rib it turned out that while coughing my muscles had spasmed and I had pulled a rib out of place. For me the pain was excruciating. It was constantly sore, I felt like I was being stabbed if I coughed and like I was having my chest ripped open if anyone touched the area that it hurt. For me I stopped doing the HTS because I couldn't stand the coughing I would just end up in tears.

I tried tylenol and it didn't take the edge off and I fought the pain thinking it was just a pulled muscle with massage. I dealt with the pain for roughly a month - it impacting my breathing to the point that I started using O2 because I couldn't take in deep breaths. I ended up talking to the doc - they took xrays and couldn't see a fracture but they wrote me a script for massage therapy and physical therapy. I went to a therapy center with a masseuse and all I can say is she is amazing. Within 5 minutes she had found the problem and corrected it. I saw her every other day for about a month because I had to retrain my muscles to not pull the rib upward the way it had been doing for so long.

For me all in all the pain lasted about 1.5 months and was practically gone after I saw this specific masseuse. Most massage therapists were completely clueless as to what the problem was but I guess with the physical and massage therapy background the other woman was able to figure it out.

I only put that out there because just letting it ride never would have helped the problem, so if you aren't seeing any improvement after a few weeks then talk to your doc. Also something to think on - maybe give the HTS a break for a few days to allow the rib to heal or at least start to heal if it is broken.
