Breathing correctly

Yes, us healthy folks should do it too. Lots of times we don't because we're stressed out and panting or because we are vain and have on too tight clothes.

Another trick that a college friend used (she'd lost almost all muscle tone from a longtime childhood illness) was to lie on her back (she could) and put a quarter (or something bigger) on her abdomen and make it go up and down with her breaths.

Again, make sure you don't have on anything constricting when you do this. Nothing tight around your waist. When you get really good at it you'll be able to work that bellows in and out about 3-4 inches.

Well, I guess I've been doing some things right, and some things wrong... as usual . The PLB thing sounds very interesting- usually, if I am breathing in some way that I have to concentrate, it is just the opposite- swimming is in through the mouth, out through the nose, and so is my neb time if I am doing Pulmozyme and/or inhaled antibiotics (it seems to help my sinuses some). Maybe if I do the PLB thing, it will help with SOB at those times too?

And thanks Amy and Lisa for confirming something I had thought about, but didn't have a clue if it was truly helping- the diaphram breathing. I had a music class in elementary school, where they taught us how to breathe from our diaphram, and since I was trying to learn how to carry a tune in a bucket , I practiced it religously. Since the singing is still not a lovely thing, I'm glad to know that I got something out of it! LOL! It is a habit I still do, it is just how I breathe now (and btw Lisa, I hate tight clothes- gotta stretch, gotta be comfy ), but I have had to practice breathing deeply into my upper lobes, as they are the ones that sound icky when I am sick...

Debbi, I am so glad that the PLB is working for you- Yay!

Since I have bronchiectisis, also, that might explain why things have been more difficult in this area.

Glad I started this thread. I've learned A LOT! And here I felt stupid asking...

Not that anyone really needs to know - just that I've still got a few links on breathing techniques that I haven't posted and that given the subject title of this thread I'm thinking I could sneak them in here....

Something on the science of PLB and why you don't want to do it in a mega way all of the time http://www.sierrabiotech.com/bt_copd_plb.htm .

National Jewish on both DB and PLB techniques http://www.njc.org/disease-info/wellness/breathing.aspx .

More article abstracts than you want to deal with in Physical Therapy journal http://www.ptjournal.org/cgi/s...tjournal&minscore=5000 with pros and cons . You'll notice that some researchers says it doesn't make a difference for folks with copd. What else is new. Everyone is different. If one or both of these techniques works for you once you get it down, then stick with it. If it doesn't, then don't bother.

....on to a Christmas Eve cruise.
