Brittle Diabetes

A friend of ours who we asked to help us do work at the house just informed us that his son is in the hospital. He has been dx with Brittle Diabetes. From what I read on the internet and what our friend tells us basically its a form that is extremely difficult to control. There is high variation between the highs & lows with no real rhyme or reason. This little boy is only 2 and it worries me greatly if he has had enough problems to have 2 seizures and be in the ICU of a Trauma Center. The Dad/Mom seem to be very diligent about testing his bloods and giving him his insulin, but it doesnt seem to be enough. What I dont know is what his diet is like. That is the first thing I thought of when I found out. So if anyone has any info that might be of benefit please let me know. Thank you!

Wow that is really sad that at 2 years old he has that severe of a form of diabetes.. It really is very hard to control and that patient can go from extreme highs to extreme lows very rapidly... Usually when they are in the hospital they can have their blood sugar checked every hour... to try to manage it...

Poor baby

i wonder if an insulin pump with a bsl monitor built in would be of any help? sure would take the guesswork out of things.

Is that the one that attaches to the abdomen? I saw a show about young children who had some kind of black box system that attached to their stomach, and somehow it monitored the blood glucose levels, and (it was a while ago) they were working on an adult version? Or maybe the kids were trying out a pediatric version... it was a year or two ago at least. Sorry, I guess that didn't help much...

My husband has two cousin's who are brittle diabetics. Both of them got pumps when they were adults and say it worked wonders. One was constantly having to regulate her blood sugars by drinking lemonade or straight coke 'cuz it'd drop so fast. The other one was also married to a brittle diabetic, who'd get so out of wack she'd have episodes -- I think of Julia Roberts in that one movie... name escapes me -- anyway she once BIT a grocery clerk.
