Carers Allowance

Hello, Sorry if this isnt in the right place.
I live in the UK and care for my partner who has Cystic Fibrosis. In UK carers are entitled to Carers Allowance which is a paltry amount paid by the state. Unfortunately, as I am a full time student the state are providing it. (Ridiculous isnt it?)
Anyway, I was wondering if students are entitled to a Carers benefit in the US? I've tried looking but I dont really know where to start.

All the best

Hi Alex, I understand your frustration with the carers allowance here in the UK, we are in Scotland, my wife gets the allowance for our son. The problem that you have is that the government count study hours as working hours, I think to get carers allowance you cant work more than 16 hours per week, or earn more that £96 per week?.
My wife cut her hours down at her work, she now only works 8 hours a week, she would have cut her hours regardless of Craig's CF, so yes the government are in a way bringing her wages back up to what they were.

The Government realise that they are saving, I think the figure £8 billion, with people caring for family at home, of course they will never admit to allowing this to happen.
You obviously look after your partner, even after you take your study hours away, for the vast majority of the day, and its just not fair.

I would suggest that you contact Gordon Brown, but my own experience on a different matter ( also involving CF)tells me that you would be wasting your time doing that.
have you tried the CF trust, they also have a forum, on there you may get some more insight and maybe ways to get round this problem, anyway goodluck

Hello craig

I've wriiten to Brown, Cameron & Clegg just trying to ascertain what they are going to do for carers.

I am only in uni 9 hours per week and they even have the audacity to state that when I at home working it is classed as supervised study.

Welcome Alex!
Could you enlighten us with what the "Carers Allowance" is? Is it a government sponsored financial benefit for the caretakers of people with CF? If so, I am not aware of any programs in the US like that.
