I was wopnder how much radiation there is in a cat scan.  I have had six and think I probably need another to see how my cavity is - whether it has completely closed along with the lobe or is maybe still open a bit.  I have read about high density and contrast ct scans and obviously I believe these to be more raditation but is an ordinary ct scan much more than the usual x-ray in terms of radiation. I would be grateful if someone could enlighten me.  I will ask to have one at my next clinic but if it is going to be a lot more radiation then maybe not a good idea. My consultant said that it could cause problems in years to come.  Has anyone else had this many ct scans or even more.  Please answer me. <br>

CT scans subject you to much more radiation than the average chest x-ray. Here is an interesting website I found that allows you to estimate your risk from radiological tests based on age, gender, type of exam, etc...

Andrew has had two ct scans as well as all of his annual x-rays and additional x-rays as needed throughout the 13 years he has been alive.  It may not sound like alot, but two ct scans is enough for now.  It would take absolute necessity for me to agree to another ct scan any time soon.

gosh Lizlas that sounds a lot but guess it depends on if it high resolution or ord ct scan - I havent a clue what I had except once I did have a contrast one with the dye added.  I thought that as the time went by it dissiipated (is that the right word) but no it just collects and doesnt go away so my consultant said so it could cause problems in about 10 to 15 years time.  Just wondered how many anyone else has had and not had problems<br>

I don't know how many CT scans I've had total. I've had 3 so far this year (2 during an exacerbation, 1 for my transplant evaluation) and 4 a couple years ago to track the progression of an invasive wangiella infection. Before that I had a couple during exacerbations and as a kid to monitor my sinus polyps. Only once did I have contrast, when I had a particularly bad pneumonia and they wanted to map it out. Add in a couple of barium swallows, dexa scans, and about a million chest x-rays and I probably glow too.
