Cayston & eFlow ???

My doctor is talking about starting me on Cayston but I don't have an eFlow. I saw on CF services website that you get the Altera neb system with your first order. Does that mean they are giving me the eFlow or is the Altera just like a nebulizer cup or something? I'm really confused and I'm sure my insurance won't cover an eFlow.

Hi Sara,

I get Cayston through CF Services Pharmacy. You'll get the actual eFlow device called the Altera and your insurance won't be charged for it. My understanding is that it's "complimentary" with your first order. Also you'll get two handsets (fancy name for fancy neb cup <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">). One comes with the Altera device and the other is a spare. Then each time you refill Cayston they send you another handset.

Thanks Jesse! I thought that you needed to get a specially mixed form of Tobi to take in it, but I guess not. I'd just be wasting half of it, but it would really cut down on treatment time. Also, I would probably continue to do my Albuterol with my regular neb system.

You can use Tobi in the TRIO eflow device, but NOT in the Altera eflow device. The Altera is specifically formulated for Cayston and anything else you put in it could clog the device and be delivered at the wrong dose.

You can ask the CF services pharmacy (or Foundation Care) if they will give you the TRIO neb cups that are usable with Tobi. As the TRIO is much more effective at distributing medication, you should talk with your doctor about a new dose and possibly new formulation of Tobi to use with the TRIO. I'm pretty sure the TRIO is similar to the Altera in that they won't charge your insurance on it, but I'm not positive.

Ditto what serendipidousday posted. They say that there is a difference between the standard eFlow (trio) and the Altera, and that you can't use the Altera for anything but Cayston. It seems like I have read that other people around here have decided to go ahead and use it for Tobi though. It supposedly had something to do with the metal head, but people say they look identical (I don't have a Trio so I can't compare). It's all so confusing!
