CF and Birth Control...

I was also told by my doctors that the depo shot was not reccommended for cf patients.. i didn't really ask why.. but I stopped taking birth control.. I have wacky periods and everytime the birth control would make it better i would go on antibiotics that would make it go all wacky again.. so after years of trying i'm just plain old sick of it.. nothing worked for me.. i tried all three basic types.. and i would always get spotting or just irregular periods.. and they're always long.. at least now i can expect it to come every 14 days and last like 14 days.. i know it's long and it doesn't take long to start agian.. but i'd rather this than the wacky mood swings and just stupid -ness of being on birthcontrol..

Ashley, are you talking about hormonal contraception (pills, patch, ring)? there are other methods that might be good options for you.
Have you considered in IUD or diaphragm?

Hi, it's me...I'm the one who orginally posted this topic. Well I went to the CF clinic yesterday and my CF doc thinks it's my thyroid glands...going to get the blood work done today....<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

Yes it's the hormonal contraception ones... pills and the patch I've tried both.. IUD's scare me.. I don't hear a lot of good things about them... I don't know why it just really really creeps me out.. diaphram.. I would consider.. it doesn't sound bad.. I've basically haven't been thinking much about it.. not really lately.. I've been trying to get my body to get into it's own non drug induced routine before i consider another form... but I think my next physical I'm going to bring it up.. I really hate going to sexual health doctors sometimes.. It's like they want everyone to be ont he pill and that is that.. i get really annoyed when doctors try to talk me into things..

I use an IUD. They still have the stigma from years back when there were problems associated with them. I absolutely love mine. The kind I have averages 10 years of use & I am on my 8th year with no problems. I worried during my flareups & weight loss that is shifted or something, but upon an exam everything showed fine. My insurance didnt cover it at the time so I had to pay $300. for it, but it was worth every penny. I can be spontanious & not worry if it will be ineffective because of med I take.

There are two IUDs currently in use - sounds like Melissa has a Paragard - copper wire on a plastic "T" with no hormones; and then there is a Mirena - plastic with progestin (synthetic progesterone) which lasts 5 years - half the time of the Paragard. A woman is a good candidate for an IUD if she is a stable relationship and not at risk for sexual infection. Ashley, ask about the Nuva Ring at your next appt. It has both hormones (estrogen and progestin) and is inserted in the vagina - three weeks in, one week out. Some women with CF experience more Bacterial Vaginosis, which the Nuva Ring can help reduce/prevent.
