cf and celiac?

I don't know the numbers either, but have read something along the lines of "if you have CF, you are 5 times more likely to have Celiac" Don't quote me on that, but that's what I remember.

Our daughter was tested for Celiac, both blood test and biopsy. She is negative, but she has eaten a wheat free diet for several years now because she feels better when she doesn't eat wheat.

For what it's worth, our GI doc said the blood test is 85% accurate. If you get a negative on the blood test and want to know for sure you aren't missing that 15% do the colonoscopy for the biopsy.

I know of 2 people with CF and Celiac. They are both considered diseases of European descent which so I think that is why it isn't "uncommon" to have both.

I hope your daughter doesn't have it, but it will be better to find out sooner than later. Also, I hope she is able to out grow some/all of those food allergies. I can only imagine how hard it is to feed her...lotsa hugs!

I know how frustrated you feel. I am 29 and just got diagnosed with Gluten, wheat, egg, dairy, corn, almond, soy, peanut, & sugar cane allergies about 7 months ago. I was in shock & did not know how to eat in order to gain weight. It has been AMAZING the differnce in my health since I cut all these foods out. I no longer have ANY gas & before this my gas problems were out of control. I lost some weight in the first 2 months (I think my body was in shock), but in the last 5 months I have gained 15 pounds! Plus, my ling function improved. I think the things that helped me gain weight were nuts of all kinds (brazil, walnut, pecan, pumpkin seeds, pepita seeds, pine nuts, etc. cashew/macadamia nut butter (a substitute for peanut or almond butter found at Trader Joe's), TONS of olive oil on EVERYTHING, canola oil, grape seed oil, flax oil, etc. All these are "good for you fats". Also avocados. I hope this helps. I too have wondered if I should get tested for celiacs, but I thik the treatment is the same-to stay away from gluten & wheat? good luck to you.....HUGS!

Cheyenne was recently dx'ed with lactose intolerance and I really believe she needs to be tested for Celiac Disease, but getting her tested for anything is like trying to pull teeth.

Interesting. I am glad to find out that there is someone else with these quetions. I would think that the prevalance of CF and celiac are more. There is some info but not alot. The funny thing is that celiac is very underdiagnosed and with Cf I bet that celiac is under the radar because all the problems with cf mask the gluten issue.
Prior to being diagnosed with Cf the doctor told my mother that I have celiac and to put me on a gluten free diet. I seemed to do ok but once I was diagnosed with Cf (age 3) they figured that celiac was not an issue. Fast forward 35 years and I was having lots of bowel trouble and the celiac question reappeared. I tested for the gluten antibodies and went gluten free for almost a year now. I have had some improvement with my health. There is a genetic test now to tell 100% if you are celiac or wheat allergy or other. The company is prometheus labs, more info on celiac.org
