CF and College

Hi, I am not familiar with what a community college has to offer for accomadations but this is what we did for both our girls.

We sought registration with the office of students with disabilities. To do this we had to have a letter from their doctors stating that they have CF, what it is and their needs. This letter recommended a single room due to the need to do frequent breathing treatments sometimes up to 4x/day and chest physical (physio)therapy, this is where it would state if a vest is being used and it's size. It also stated that inhaled antibiotics are used. It mentioned the coughing as well.

Oh, and best of all, we got that single room at the double room rate.

I got a letter from my doctor and coordinated it with the dorm I was staying in. I got a private room. That helped me and I did not have to be around a roomate who could get sick. I can get my rest etc. For sure get a room for yourself only. Bummer no roomate but we gotta do what we gotta do.

Thanks for the help. Here is on my situation. I am a member with the schools Disability Resource Center (DRC) however they have not been much help. When I first started school here the DRC asked for a letter from the doc and all that. Then they had me take a few short test to see what services I best qualify for. They told me that I qualify for extended time for test, note taker, books on tape or CD, and a tutor. I know I would qualify from dorm accommodation however my school dose not provide student housing. Lucky I only live 10mins from school. My problem lies more with hospitalization that anything else. I really have a hard time getting in contact with my Instructors. i have tried Email and Phone calls both myself and through the DRC. I never get a response. I spoke with the DRC about this and they stated that they can not make the Instructors get in contact with me. I thought to myself then how am I supposed to stay up with the class. They said something about a note taker. I said that a note take would not work for me. I don't trust note from another student. Reason being who is to say you will even understand the notes if you and the other student are not on the same page and understand things the same way. I asked for a tape recorder thinking that it would work better. The DRC said that would be ok, but I would have to have a family member go to the class and turn it on for me. That is not possible do to everyone working. I asked why the Instructor cant do it for me. They said that it not their job. It is up to them if they are willing to do that. From there I asked them what "What am I supposed to do when I can get my work and no one will call me back when im out? Am I just supposed to take it and get my work when I get back and be so fare behind that it will almost impossible to finish on time?"
They didn't have much to say about that. I also said something about the ADA and that as fare as I know that by law they have to make just about any accommodation that will help me pass my class's. All they said to that was "We are not sure we would have to look into that and it is something that we do not already offer it would be up to the Instructor if they want to honor it or not. That about some's it up to where I am right now. I do not believe they are in the right with this. Has anyone else had any problems like this and what did you do about it? Im not realy sure what to do except maybe find another school to go to. Any more thoughts or suggestions would be great. Sorry this is so long!
