There is no where on this site i said anyone was dumb. I said If you have CF and you drink or smoke you living dangerously more so than a quote "normal" person plus I never called anybody names. I'm just trying to get people talking. and if some contoversy erupts i think that's a good thing. Get's people talking.

Why do all the women keep saying I was judging people last night. I wasn't judging anybody i was simply stating that from my past experiences with pancreatitis and from what my Dr.s have told me alchohol is more dangerous to a person with CF than a person without. That's not being judgemental. i mean there were people on there saying it was ok for CFboy to drink because it was his dicision. Well that's just crazy. First of all it's illegal for him to be drinking at his age and secondly it's terrible for his health. Alcohol is not only horrible on your pancrease but it can cause respitory depression if you go on a bender. I don't see how that can be judgemental. I was simply giving some advise you can take it or leave it.

I never said that either. I never implied that I was smarter than anybody else chatting last night. I think some people need to know the difference between judging someone or giving out some advise. I never said you have to do this or that or you will die. I was just giving advise out and answering questions from experiences i've had since 1966. People with CF have to live their lives differently than "normal" people that's the only message I was trying to convay. But to tell a 16 year old to drink if he wanted to because it's his decision don't you think that's horrible advise. I didn't make it to 40 years old by not taking care of myself. I'll be in the chat room at 7pm if anybody would like to discuss anything. Not Judge.

- So if we drink we are not smart (same as dumb)?

I don't know I guess I'm old school. They said I wouldn't live to see my 1st birthday and 40 years later I'm still kicking deaths ass.

- So you are much better at this CF thing and have all the answers? You are doing everything right and those who do not make it to 40 are what?

Are people with CF taking for granted that the median age has risen so much over the last 40 years that they think they are invincable now?

- Yes, i wear my big red Cf invincabilty cloak to all the bars every Saturday night. it's very sexy. Again insinuating we are not smart (dumb)

i don't know but wait till they have a couple bouts of pancreatitis and the'll snap back into reality.

- Did you just wish me ill in the hopes it will make me smarter (smarter by your standards)? Or into REALITY...suggesting I'm what in denial? Living a fantasy? </end quote>

That is why we all find it judgemental. It was. And I'll go further and say it was self righteous and snotty. (oh but don't take that to mean I just called you an @$*, I didn't SAY that anywhere)

Let's all chill friends-maybe this is a judgemental thread-but it's more of an opinion thread. After all, you could start a thread on whether or not Tobramycin is ok cause it causes liver damge-is that judging? Yes. Pretty many threads here are basically judging in one way or another-but it's just giving opinions. What's wrong with that?

Getting back to the original thread: The only thing I have been solidly told by a doctor is to avoid alcohol when I'm on prednisone. Prednisone can make you loopy mentally, and alcohol is a depressant-so bad mix. Of course also when you're on any meds for pain no alcohol.

I enjoy a glass of wine or champagne, or a fruity drink occasionally. So I'm not anti-alcohol. Also I'm biased b/c alcohol really doesn't make me feel good or relax me-it makes me achy and cranky-always has. But I think it is a solid fact that over drinking is not good for livers.....and most cfers are on lots of meds, which are overworking our livers as it is. So I think the people that don't agree with drinking alot aren't saying so for a "judgmental" or moral reason-it's a health reason.

It's an opinion.

Little Debbie what you just did was make an assumption. I never said if you drank it made you stupid. I said if you have CF and you drink you have a better than average chance of having a health problem ie..pancreatitis than a "normal person" might have. Come on people. I was giving out some advise because of some things that had happened to me (pancreatitis) when I was younger and I drank. If you can find a Dr. that specializes in CF to say that any form of drinking being it moderate or heavy is no more dangerous to a person with CF than a person without CF I would love to know his name.

What upset me was not the topic but the way it was put. I didn't like the whole "are these people not smart enough" comment. I have no problem if you just said the side effects of drinking and were suprised that people do it. I just thought that how you put it was offensive.

Keep in mind when educating others about how bad drinking can be, it would be best not to put them down. Just educate and leave the comments alone.

Thank you Sue, thats all I was trying to say.

Ricky you asked why people thought it was judgemental, i was just trying to show you (educate you) as to where they were drawing that conclusion.

Drinking to much is not a good thing for any one to do

no matter if You have Cf or not,

that said, I am 49 years old and I have been seeing the same
Doc since I was 8, He has a limited group now , he is 92....
Yes I do have another Doc to, But back to where I was going,
I have been over Dr.K's house many times over the years and had
glass of wine with Him, we never slamed them or had more than one
but he always said a glass of wine or a beer every now and then is okay.

I have been lucky I have never had pancreatitis, KNOCK on WooD,,,,
I recently had a very good friend 49 years old who passed from drinking
Dan drank every day until ha passed out, woke up and did it all over again.
His body could not take it anymore,3/28/06 he passed out and never woke up.

I guess I am saying a glass of wine or a beer is okay,,,,
I have maybe 4 to 5 beers a year, if that...........

But I have never been told by any Doctor that due to Cf I should Never have
a drink............

Hardcore frequent drinking is bad for anyone. I like to have some beers with friends on my weekend (monday or tuesday) and play darts and trivia and eat and laugh and have a ball. I like beer. I realize alcohol is alcohol, but liquor will destroy you quicker, especially if your beer consumption is casual.

I drink a few beers, get a buzz, laugh my a*s off, and then wait usually about a week to do it again. Sometimes, i'll go two or three weeks without a drop. It's a personal choice. If someone wants to have fun but possibly live a shorter life (within reason, i'm not advocating purposely destroying yourself), that is up to them. It is also up to them if they don't enjoy or want to consume alcohol in any form and live some extra years.

I'm 35 and in amazing shape. My hardcore drinking/partying days are behind me, but I do like to get a nice buzz with some good beer and be social and have fun, to really enjoy what life I have left. I went 100% alcohol free for a little over a year. My conclusion was that being 100% sober for extended periods of time is extremely boring, and watching those around me who do what I do now (but then), wasn't any fun. Yes it's possible to live alcohol free, I have done it. But it's not for me.

My lungs were going to kill me before my liver or pancrease were going to. I have pretty much taken care of the lung aspect with OO. Within reason, I feel a life lacking what you consider fun, is't really living. Of course others might feel differently, it's their call. So far all my blood work, liver function tests, weight, and everything else has been very normal to very good, so I guess i'm doing something right. Not to mention a different CF could 100% abstain from drinking, and die due to other CF issues, and I could live to be 50+ and socially drink.

Not to mention, the things I have done and witnessed others doing when alcohol was involved is beyond priceless. I could sit and tell funny real stories for a very long time of things that took place when myself and others were partaking. The sex stories alone could account for atleast a nights worth of fireside bards tales

Every culture on earth has some form of alcohol consumption, and has been with us in one form or another since man first learned that when things ferment, and we consume them, we get silly and happy

I understand drinking even in moderate amounts isn't good for a CF patient, but jeez...Considering what is in our drinking water, our food, and all around us in our environment, it's a miracle we all don't die of cancer at the age of 40 anyways. Have some responsible moderate fun while you are here. I think being one who produces and enjoys extreme laughter in my life, has directly contributed to me living as long as I have and have the health that I have.

BTW when the Marula tree in Africa drops it's fruit, not many animals directly go to eat the fruit. But nearly every mammal around waits for the fruit to drop and ferment on the ground, THEN they all run to go eat it, apparently with the sole purpose of getting smashed out of their minds. Nothing better than seeing drunk elephants and baboons with hang overs.

You're right. A joyless life can't be great for a person's health. Not that booze is the only way to experience joy, but hey, if Saturday night gets you through all the others, more Powers to you. But not too much more!

My doctor suggested to me that I have a glass of wine with meals to enhance my appetite. Apparently alcohol does that to you. He's not saying to go out and get smashed, but the occasional glass of wine or cocktail is not going to really do any harm.
