CF and Farms

Thee is something that is in the spray that farmers use for organic crops that is lethal to people with lung complications, especially CF. Allie mentioned this to me once in chat. She said she thought that Ry caught it on one of their outings to the country, and that started his downward spiral. I cannot find the site she showed me about it--darn it! So I would suggest not going when spraying is happening.

Biopesticide Threatens Those with Cystic Fibrosis
by Mindy Pennybacker
Since 1992, unbeknownst to most of us, Burkholderia cepacia (Bc), a soil bacterium which has caused serious disease and death in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF), was approved as an agricultural pesticide for use in seeds and soil. Now, in an alarming development for the 30,000 Americans afflicted with this terrible pulmonary disease, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is considering an application by the Agrium Company for aerial spraying of this product.

Hiya<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

Thanks for all your comments - they have certainly helped. Basically, we have a 3 and a half year old daughter with CF and she attends Playgroup. Next Monday, they are holding a half day trip to a farm (of all places!). Anyway, I knew in the back of my mind that they might be a risk to people with CF. As I haven't much experience in CF (at the moment) - getting there though slowly though, I just wanted a bit of advice. As always, I've got loads back.

Our daughter has cultured Psuedo twice. At first we were convinced she'd picked it up at the hospital, but after things had calmed down, we realise she could have picked it up anywhere.

Maybe we won't go on the trip, but that doesn't mean that she will never visit a farm in her life! I just don't feel at the moment that the time is right. Just gotta get my head round a few things first. The thing that scares me the most at the moment is 'cepacia'. I picked up on the word right from the start, don't know how I knew about it, but I remember not long after our daughter was diagnosed feeling really scared and anxious about it. Still really freaks me out now.

Anyways, sorry to waffle on, but thanks again. By the way, I see 'Dyza's' name showing up often and noticed your from Scotland. Maybe mentioned this before, but we live in North Wales - least it's the same country though! I am totally addicted to this website and learn loads from it - much more than my daughter's Consultant. She's lovely, and is excellent at her job, but we just don't get the same sort of advice and understanding from her than I do from here.

Take care. Sure I'll be back with more questions (if you don't mind).
