CF and Farms

Thanks for all your comments - they have certainly helped. Basically, we have a 3 and a half year old daughter with CF and she attends Playgroup. Next Monday, they are holding a half day trip to a farm (of all places!). Anyway, I knew in the back of my mind that they might be a risk to people with CF. As I haven't much experience in CF (at the moment) - getting there though slowly though, I just wanted a bit of advice. As always, I've got loads back.

Our daughter has cultured Psuedo twice. At first we were convinced she'd picked it up at the hospital, but after things had calmed down, we realise she could have picked it up anywhere.

Maybe we won't go on the trip, but that doesn't mean that she will never visit a farm in her life! I just don't feel at the moment that the time is right. Just gotta get my head round a few things first. The thing that scares me the most at the moment is 'cepacia'. I picked up on the word right from the start, don't know how I knew about it, but I remember not long after our daughter was diagnosed feeling really scared and anxious about it. Still really freaks me out now.

Anyways, sorry to waffle on, but thanks again. By the way, I see 'Dyza's' name showing up often and noticed your from Scotland. Maybe mentioned this before, but we live in North Wales - least it's the same country though! I am totally addicted to this website and learn loads from it - much more than my daughter's Consultant. She's lovely, and is excellent at her job, but we just don't get the same sort of advice and understanding from her than I do from here.

Take care. Sure I'll be back with more questions (if you don't mind).

Thanks for all your comments - they've been a great help. Basically, our 3 and a half year old daughter has been invited on a trip to a farm (of all places!) and I knew in the back of my mind that there might be some risks for people with CF. What I have read, I don't feel happy to take her - some of you might not agree, some of you might, but I just don't feel right about it at the moment. I'm not saying that she'll never go on a farm in her life though!

One thing that makes me feel really anxious though is 'cepacia'. I don't know loads about it, but I remember as far back as when she was diagnosed with CF, I kept picking up on the word and remember feeling really freaked out about it.

Thanks again for your advice. I also notice Craig that you're from Scotland, might of mentioned this before but we live in North Wales.

Take care.

as long as there isnt crops growing there i dont see a problem.... but the pesticides used to spray crops contain b. cepacia... ive heard that it has been outlawed to use that sort of pesticide but who knows for sure which farmer still does or not...

cepacia has also been seen in rotting vegetables such as onions, tomatoes, potatoes etc.
