ooo...i've been thinking about the same thing lately! i'm gonna be a freshmen in college next year and i have to decide whether i want a roomate or not...i really want one for 'the college experience' but im worried they're gonna think i'm bonkers. i dont have an issue telling people, especially at my school...there's only 300 kids and i literally do my nebs in the hallway, no one cares. but college is different and i dont want a roomate thats gonna freak out about it. i hope i meet someone at orientation that i can get along with...!

as for what i've thought about/the advice i've recieved... just tell them as you need...first let them know, i cough, cuz i have a lung thing, and i do meds to get my cough better. when your at lunch and you have to do insulin/enzymes say, oh yeah that lung thing, it also affects my pancreas. if you brush it off as no problem, they will too.

i think i should take my own advicee

i've had many roomies.

i tell them all about my CF.... i feel no need to hide anything.

the mystery of hiding what's going on with meds, treatments, coughing, etc. can only exacerbate the situation and add to the "weirdness" fashion.

explaining about CF in a normal, matter-of-fact way takes away any chance of them feeling awkward/weirded out, etc. it's worked really well.

it just becomes routine and nothing really interesting when i do my vest, aerosol treamtnets, popping pills, etc. no biggie.

Thanks! Definitely people take cues from you about it. I am rarely sick and so I just want people to not freak out when I'm doing proactive treaments! I'll just tell people it's the "lung thing" and not stress about it! In my experience w/ roomates there will inevitably be more issues than this (and boy I remember from the good ole' days)...my health being probably low on everyone's radar.

I think you should get a roomate for the true college experience! when i was in college my roomate sucked but it definitely was an experience!

My biggest issue with a roommate was getting her to understand that "no smoking" did not just mean no smoking when I was there, but no smoking, by anyone, ever, in our room. My (then) boyfriend (now husband ), caught her boyfriend walking into the room with a lit cig, and very nicely , but firmly, told him that he could not smoke in the room because of my lung issues. Her boyfriend looked surprised about it, but was very nice about it, leaving me to realize that my roommate had decided for herself that it was okay to let someone smoke in our room if she thought I wasn't there, despite what I had told her.

Here's a bonus, just for laughs:

When I went to college, I got to stay on campus in the "disabled" 1st floor room (I originally was going to commute, but changed my mind, and it turned out that they had to save this room longer just in case before assigning anyone to it). So, I qualify because of my cf, which we discussed with them ad nausem, and get the room. And they assign me a smoker (different girl) for a roommate. Duh. Gotta love the college system sometimes .
