We bought a portable unit once for a rental we lived in. It required constant cleaning. I managed to avoid moving to another place with a swamp cooler in place of central AC. Here's an excerpt from a wikipedia article:

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evaporative_cooler">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evaporative_cooler</a>

Under "Disadvantages":
# Odors and other outdoor contaminants may be blown into the building unless sufficient filtering is in place.
# Asthma patients may need to avoid poorly maintained evaporatively cooled environments.
