CF Centers -- Dr. Black Vs. Dr. Konig

I just recently learned that CFF.org keeps a database of the Stats of CF Centers. I checked out our Center, and I realize that the Stats can't be accurate, and that there are always circumstances to be taken into consideration, but to be honest, I wasn't so happy with what I saw. Dr. Blacks' clinic is, in my opinion, not as good as I would expect a CF pediatric clinic to be.

I checked the stats of the other 3 centers in our State, and was far more impressed with the others. The best one happens to be in Columbia, under the direction of Dr. Konig. Their stats either meet, or come pretty close to meeting the national Goal for care, whereas most of Dr. Blacks stats are pretty normal, but his stats for care in Children are terrible. They're 47.1 where the national average is 68.2 and the National Goal is 90.

I'm kinda torn now. I want the best care for my daughter. Do I stick with Dr. Black, or should I explore this other clinic? We've only met Dr. Black once. We've been to his office twice now, and realized that he doesn't meet with his patients unless it's needed. I also don't like the fact that we aren't being proactive about Paige's care. I realize that this relationship is still very new, and that each case is different, and that we haven't had time to establish anything, but still. Shouldn't we hit the ground running, instead of learning to walk here?

So, what should I do? How many of you are patients of Dr. Black, and how many are patients of Dr. Konig? What do you all, who are far more experienced then I am, recommend here??

Hi Chelsea,

Every time Bek goes to CMH, she sees Doc Black. I know the last time you were there he was on his way to a meeting when he left our room. Monday and Tuesday appointments are usually in the afternoon, so I don't know why they had you come in the morning. We were there early so that she could be admitted early in the day if there was no improvement in her x-rays.

Is Columbia closer for you? If so, then I would definitely check it out. We all want what is best for our kids, so go with your gut.

We go back again on 9/11 for yet another follow up, so I feel he is being pro-active. He's not waiting the normal 3 month visit to see her again. He listens to my concerns and always takes them into consideration, and will always explain to me why something shouldn't be done.

With her father not being compliant with her nebs and vest, her health is not as bad as it should be because of the treatment regimine he has her on. He knows that her father is non-compliant, so he adjusts what I do for her here at home so that she can stay as healthy as possible. He also agrees with me starting her vest with each of her nebs to compensate for her not getting the tx while she is with her bio.

I hope this has helped. How is Paige doing now? Have you got all her meds adjusted? When is your next appointment at CMH?

That does help a bunch! Thank you! I really am hoping they were just busy last time I was there. I'm going to see how this apt goes before I make any decisions.

Paige is doing ok. She's gained some weight, but she's starting to not want to eat as much. She just becomes uninterested, and doesn't finish a bottle. Her Diapers have also picked up, and so has her cough.

Our next Apt. is Monday, and Matthew has his sweat test scheduled that day as well. Hopefully all goes well! I'll make sure to update everyone!
