CF & HPV

I recently told my boyfriend that I have high-risk HPV (a sexually transmitted disease that can lead to cerivcal cancer in women). He is extremely concerned that he will pass this on to his brother (who has CF) through hugging, touching, etc. due to his low-immunity. I feel horrible, but do not have any idea about CF. Does anyone know if this is a concern, or anything about CF and HPV?

I believe HPV is only transmitted sexually and it doesn't really pose a risk to men. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Believe me - I have done a lot of research re: this topic and it is only transmitted sexually. The high-risk HPV only affects women in that they are at high-risk for cervical cancer. This is not the type that causes genital warts and essentially poses no threats to men. However, with that being said my boyfriend is still concerned that ANY virus, the common cold, the flu or even this could be life-threatening to his brother having CF. Do you have any ideas about this? I don't think there is any way 1) his brother could contract it (short of sexual contact btwn. the two of them) and 2) if he were to contract it, would this be detrimental to a person with CF?
My boyfriend thinks that b/c HPV can be transmitted through sexual contact (not just sexual intercouse) that he could touch himself down there and then perhaps spread it through his hand to his brother.

I am a female CF'er who has HPV...I've had to have two cryosurgeries and two LEEP (sp?) procedures following severe dysplasia, but go in every 6 months for a pap. I don't believe having CF has an effect on the the HPV (it's EXTREMELY common)...if you're a women you just have to be religious about your checkups so it doesn't turn into something more.

I am a woman with HPV and it can be passed orally as well. You may want to go to a sexual health website or a local health dept. to get info. They usually have pamphlets (sp) hanging on the wall.

And Emily how could you have HAD this? There is no cure. I just don't understand.

I'm going to try to make a very long story shorter......If I remember the sequence of events correctly, Emily had a LEEP and her cervix healed shut but we didn't know it until several months later when she ended up in the ER due to severe stomach pain. (after several trips to the ER when they couldn't figure out what was wrong). She had surgery to open up her cervix and "clean her out". She healed shut again and was told at that time, that she would probably continue to have this issue and have surgery every six months or remove the problem by having everything removed. She asked at the time, if that would also get rid of the HPV and the doctor told her yes. Correct me if I'm wrong Em

No, mom, that's just about right. I know there's no cure for HPV. I had such harsh complications because of the LEEP, that a year and a half aftterwards I ended up having a hysterectomy in which they removed my cervix and uterus. I was told that HPV lives primarily on the cervix... and mine is gone. When I asked my obgyn if I was free of it, she told me, "Yes. There <i>might</i> be tiny pieces left pretty much impossible to detect or pass along, but I'd say it's gone, and you don't need to worry about it anymore."

Unless I'm incorrect, there really is no risk to a man, even a man with a compromised immune system. As I understand it, the "risk" is in passing to another female and infecting her - causing cervical dysplasia and/or leading to cervical cancer. Am I mistaken?

Are you ever sad that you may not carry your own children, or at least you may need extra help with creating children. Pardon me if I'm wrong or sound like an idiot. That is not my intent.

You're not wrong or an idiot. Yeah it makes me sad sometimes to know that I can never carry my own kids, but there's nothing much I can do about it. I am successful in ignoring it the majority of the time. And when it does sneak up and get to me, I just talk to Mike about it and by the time we're done, I feel better. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0">

HPV (human pampillona virus) is a sexually transmitted disease of which there are 2 strains - low risk causes genital warts and high risk can cause cervical changes in women.

LEEP is where they cut off a portion of the cervix (I think it was a 1/3 if I remember right) with this sharp <i>and</i> hot instrument. So it cuts the piece off and cauterizes it shut at the same time. They do this to rid a woman of pre-cancerous or cancreous cells on her cervix.

There is a vaccine available for HPV. It was developed in Australia, so not sure if it's available where you are. I don't know what genital warts do in cf specifically, but HPV can cause cervical cancer in any woman who catches it.
