Hi My names Billy. I was diagnosed when I was 16, just a mild case, poor lung function from 16 years of not being treated. Anyway, it took until I was 21 to get over my denial and actually starting care of myself. Then my pancreas went wonky and I started taking enzymes. So, I was hoping anyone could answer a question of mine. I'm sort of a rookie when it comes to daily CF related issues.

My question is related to enzymes. Hypothetically, say, you wanted to lose weight, could you just not take your enzymes? Lets say you wanted a Milkyway but didn't want the calorie intake, would you just not take enzymes?

The problem with not taking enzymes is that many of the nutrients and go right through you, which isn't a good thing. I can tell you that if I don't take enough of my enzymes with a high fat meal or snack, I pay dearly GI wise...diarrhea, severe cramps (I know, TMI). I too did not become pancreatic insufficient until I was older (that actually was a red flag for being tested for CF...dx'd at 33) after a huge weight loss. With that, my vitamin levels were terrible...since the enzymes, they are much better. Being nutritionally healthy is very important especially when it comes to fighting off infections, it is wisest to keep taking the enzymes.
Hope this helps...Jenn

Other thing with not taking enzymes is you could develop an intestinal blockage because of the undigested food, sticky mucus...

blunt answer to your question.... YES. i did it i would actually consider it an eating dissorder to an extent because i did it so often. its not good at all. its hard on the body and as a lot of people who are pancreatic insuffient would tell you, its painfull. not to mention it just gives you that bloated belly look. i dont recomend doing it. i have now learned how hard it really is on my body. i just turned 21 and i am just coming out of my denial after a very informative hospital stay.
