Hey Courtney,

They do not usually test your baby for CF while you are pregnant. Did you have your baby's father checked for mutations? That would be the first step. If he is positive for a mututation, then they might take the testing a bit further if you wanted.

My children's father was not a carrier of the most common 86 mutations, and therefore we "assumed" there was no CF in the baby. Of course, it could still happen with a less common mutation, but not very likely (very slight chance of it happening).

When I gave birth, I was so scared that the baby might have CF, even though the carrier screen was negative. My OB and my CF doctor both told me not to worry. When Gavin was born, they said there was no reason to check him out because he had no CF symptoms. Sure enough, he is still symptom free and a healthy little baby boy.

So the main point is, if the father is not a carrier, you have nothing to worry about. If he is a carrier, you may want to do further testing...or just know that there is that 50% chance.

Regarding gestational diabetes, you are NOT guaranteed to get it. My CF doctor studied this and said that it happens in about 50% of CF women who get pregnant, and out of that 50%, about 1/2 of them continue to develop CFRD. I took a 1-hour glucose test when I was pregnant and it was high. Then I did the 3-hour and it was normal. So you can never be sure until you go through the testing.

Good luck!

at 6mo pregnant you should be tested for gestational NOW, CF'ers can develop diabetes much earlier than the 'average'. The normal test is done around 26-27 weeks however my doctor tests immediately for CF'ers or those with impaired glucose tolerance.

Additionally unless you had the full panel on your husband I would recommend having the full panel done on your child to make SURE they dont have CF. I was 'perfectly healthy' child for a long time but was diagnosed with CF @ 21 years of age. My daughter did have full panel and I DID have ot fight with insurance and obtain a letter saying why she should ahve it from CF doctors but I did get the testing done and the piece of mind was invaluable, I was even willing to set up a payment plan with ambry for the cost if need be.
