Hey Courtney,
They do not usually test your baby for CF while you are pregnant. Did you have your baby's father checked for mutations? That would be the first step. If he is positive for a mututation, then they might take the testing a bit further if you wanted.
My children's father was not a carrier of the most common 86 mutations, and therefore we "assumed" there was no CF in the baby. Of course, it could still happen with a less common mutation, but not very likely (very slight chance of it happening).
When I gave birth, I was so scared that the baby might have CF, even though the carrier screen was negative. My OB and my CF doctor both told me not to worry. When Gavin was born, they said there was no reason to check him out because he had no CF symptoms. Sure enough, he is still symptom free and a healthy little baby boy.
So the main point is, if the father is not a carrier, you have nothing to worry about. If he is a carrier, you may want to do further testing...or just know that there is that 50% chance.
Regarding gestational diabetes, you are NOT guaranteed to get it. My CF doctor studied this and said that it happens in about 50% of CF women who get pregnant, and out of that 50%, about 1/2 of them continue to develop CFRD. I took a 1-hour glucose test when I was pregnant and it was high. Then I did the 3-hour and it was normal. So you can never be sure until you go through the testing.
Good luck!
