CF vs CF TRANSPLANT PATIENTS

So my brother had his double lung transplant Dec/06. And as of a month ago is going down hill. (Lost 40% of his lung cap) My question is this: Why do people with CF get all thier drugs for free(at least we do in Canada, not sure about the US) when CF people who have had Transplants have to pay for thier drugs? My brother has to pay for them first but then when tax season arrives he gets his money back. HELLO!!! Transplant drugs can start at $300 a pop...What the heck?? This is sooooooooooo dumb! Is there anything we can do? I mean WE as in People in general. Is there a petition we can start to help these transplant peoople so they DO NOT have to pay EVER for thier drugs to help keep them alive? I am soooooooooo PISSED! any ideas or suggestions or ideas will be awsome!!

No ideas or suggestions here, Jina. In the US we don't get any of our drugs for free. If we're lucky we have a copay (which really add up when you have about 13 prescriptions, believe me! Quite a few of mine are $50 ea., $35...) and some pay 20% for each med. No insurance, you pay the whole thing.

I had a friend who had a tx and I know that the meds are extremely expensive and she had to pay for hers upfront and wait for reimbursal, too. It is very sad when you can't afford what is needed to keep you alive.

I don't know about Canada, but in the US we have pharmaceutical commercials on TV all of the time and I always think "If they weren't paying for advertising I wonder how much cheaper their drugs would be?" I think it's stupid to advertise them. That overhead is millions of dollars! You need a drs. prescription to get them so the dr. is the one that needs to know they are available, not the patient.

Anyhow, I hope your brother's condition turns around soon.

Jina-look at some of the companies and see if they have a low income provision or soemthing to help get them at lower cost. Or take out a loan and use it for the meds then pay back loan at tax season, just an idea.

Previously when my husband and I had to pay 3000 up front for meds we would save all year to make sure we had 3000 in an account, then we woudl pay out of that at the beginning of the year so it was not stressful, then after we me that our insurance started picking up bill and we woudl start saving for next eyar.

Of course we are not already payign some 40% of our income out in income taxes to our country so that they can take care of us, kinda ironic what Canada is doing to you in my eyes. "here pay us, we will take care of you, oh wait, take care of yourself but still pay us" -- how strange. Are you sure there are no loop holes?
