okay let me start off by saying that i know i am too young to drink and i'm not going to anytime soon but i was thinking about the future and this kind of makes me worried, so as we all know, you can't smoke with cystic fibrosis so i already knew and understood that forever (smoking is gross anyway) but i just got diagnosed with CFRD last week and i remembered hearing something about the fact that diabetics can't drink alcohol, is that true for people with CFRD as well? i just was wondering because i always worry about how my adult life will be and i feel like people won't want to hang out with me when i'm older because i don't do the things they do. so please help me out here thanks!

well, let me start off by saying that in your future, if there are people that won't give you their friendship or compassion simply because you cannot drink, then you shouldn't waste your time on trying with them anyway. There are plenty of people in this world who do not judge, or base their friendships on what others can/cannot do. I have plenty of friends who do not drink for religious reasons, they think it's an awful habit, or they simply can't stand the taste of anything alcoholic. It's your company and personality that makes you...not your ability to drink, smoke, whatever. I don't mean to sound like an after school special. Just know that there will always be people who will want to hang out with you for you, not your ability to have a glass of wine or a beer if you wanted it.

That being said, I've had CFRD for about 4 years. When I was first dx with it, one of my first questions was about drinking alcohol. I was told that aside from the normal risks of drinking alcohol, drinking should be done in moderation. It's certainly possible, but like with anything else, you will have to see how your body responds and how your sugars fluctuate with certain drinks. For me, a beer wont mess up my sugars, but a vodka cranberry will shoot them up super high if I don't bolus for the juice. To be perfectly honest with you, alcohol messes with my lungs and breathing more than it has ever effected my CFRD.

I agree with Erin-- watch your sugars.

I stopped drinking as soon as I got a my diagnosis of CFRD.

Alcohol messes with my lungs something vicious. My secretions get dry and coughing is hard. It even messes with the secretions in my nose. I don't like the feeling so I don't drink anymore.

If it messes up your lungs I'd just stay away. That being said, alcohol actually lowers your BS, however a really fruity drink will raise it.

When I was first dxed my friend had me toting around cookies at the club just in case I bottomed out. It turns out no matter how much I drink, it just has no effect on me BS-wise.
