CFRD and blood sugars around 350

PLUCKY

New member
Hello I have CFRD and am still new to it last night I spiked over 350 on my sugar levels. It took over 40 units of insulin and 3 hours to get it down to normal? Does anyone else have this kind of highs? is it normal? I hadn't eating anything for more than 3 hours when it spiked and had only drank water?

thanks for any help

Are you on advair inhaler or prednisone? Or any other steroid for that matter?

Advair will cause your B.S. to increase. I had that problem for a while I would drive myself nuts trying to figure it out. Then I sat down and made a list of all the things I had done since I had last eaten .. before my sugar spiked and advair was on the list every time and since it is a partial steroid I realized that was the problem.

Usually for me it sends my sugars into the high 200s if I don't compensate with meds. Just be careful if you are giving yourself that much insulin at night because I would hate to see you bottom out in the middle of the night.

Do your docs have you on a sliding scale with your insulin?
I know my docs told me NOT to give multiple doses of insulin within 2 hours of each other - in regards to the fast acting insulin. The reason is because it can take up to 2 hours for the insulin to fully do its job and if you keep giving insulin every 30 minutes or 1 hr it could possibly hit you like a mac truck and send your b.s. extremely low.

Hi Lindsey,
I knew you would be one of the first to respond No I don't tak advair only servent. I am not on any steriods. Yes I am on a sliding scale, but have never been told not to take more than one does in 2 hours? I guess I got lucky I gave myself 10 units every 30 minutes for 2 hours straight.

wow! that is a lot of insulin!

i have had something like this happen before. i was doing insulin, my blood sugar was in the 400s, and it didn't seem to be having any effect in the period of an hour or so. boy did i feel like crap. i called the doc on call and she said to wait for the insulin to work and to drink plenty of water so i didn't get dehydrated, a risk with ongoing high blood sugar. i never did figure out what it was, it was just an isolated incident. but at the time i was fighting an infection. still, my numbers would never be THAT high for THAT long, only that once.

good luck.

I also take Advair but have never had any relation to my blood sugars with it. I also am on the old version of insulin - Humulin NPH - and take humulin Regular when needed. I've been on it so many years ,i dont see a reason to change *shrugs*. When i do my Advair in the morning and evening its ususlly at a time when my blood sugar is always in the normal range right before i eat so that may be why i dont see any relation to Advair.... who knows.

PLUCKY-- I have had blood sugars in the 350 range and higher in the past many times. There are many reasons why that can happen. Stress, infection, medication . One thing you may want to try together with using extra insulin is exercise. Exercise lowers blood sugar. I also drink extra fluids which helps to keep you hydrated. High blood sugar dehydrates you , so extra fluids will at least help you feel better .

here is another thought ... Could you have forgotten to take a dose of insulin? I take insulin with every meal ... I don't know if you do the same or not. If you do you may have forgotten to give your dose with the last meal you had. If that were the case you could have not eaten in hours but your sugar would be high because of the meal you ate.

Just a thought.

Having CFRD myself, I concur with what Diane said. There have been times when my sugars are over 200 and I get out and walk for a while & that always seems to help.
My husband's even pulled over at a gas station & encouraged me to walk around the station 3-4 times! I get looks, but just explain what I'm doing if anyone is bold enough to ask.
So if you have the energy, then exercise should really help

I think it might be what Lindsey said, at least based on my own experience of forgetting. Or maybe it is a timing thing. I find that if I don't take insulin exactly before a meal, it takes a lot more to get it back down than it takes to keep it from rising. Once's my blood sugar is high, is seems to take significantly more to get it down. Not sure why.
