cfrd/cf and alcohol.

Like most things .... moderation is the key tho after years of experience I have come to believe that avoiding it altogether is great. Alcohol can do a few things to a body. Such as dehydrate, aggivate the sugars for CFRD & if you have liver problems it can add to it. No its not the same for everyone, but these are the possibilities. I have done my share of drinking & can no longer do it. I also no longer wish to. It takes to long to bounce back. Others do ok........

Hi there,

Similar to you, I was only diagnosed recently with the whole cfrd. I was at a party last night, and perhaps had just a teeeeeny bit too much to drink lol. I didn't take any insulin with me or anything, but when I got home my sugars (by our measurements) were 6. The normal for us is 4-7, so 6 is just perfect. I drank mostly white wine and champagne. It would appear I didn't need insulin for this anyway!

FYI - wine and hard liquor cause my sugars to drop. Cocktails, champagne and beer cause my sugars to go up. You might want to keep that in mind.

liz is right. alcohol causes sugars to drop. if you are drunk, you might not know your sugars are dropping until its too late. if you do decide to drink, make sure its of the sugary variety. its better to have a night of slightly high sugar than end up with a hypo.

I was also eating a ton of sausage rolls and chocolate cookies at the time, so the balance of these sugars and then the lack of sugars with the alcohol, may be why my sugars were just right! Hmmmmmmm <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">
