My blood sugars are all over the place. really low or really high. which makes one feel like "YOU KNOW WHAT". I am now taking Lantus in the PM and Novalog prn on a 1u/30 slidng scale. I am going to call my dr tomorrow and see if he has any suggestions. I get really fast drops in my BS and it scares the heck out of me.
It didnt used to be like this.

any suggestions out there. I am open to any help

when do you get the drops? an hour or 2 after meals? if so, sounds like you are taking too much novolog. you might need to lower the novolog and increase the lantus. speak to a diabetic nurse to sort it out.

mare,

i've never really had uncontrollable highs and lows that fluctuate, but i know enough about being high and low to know that must not be fun.

i personally believe that the needs of a CFer fluctuate a lot. meaning, we go back and forth with needing more and less of things as our bodies are in better or worse health. i like the regimin i am on (lantis at bedtime and humalog with meals) because it allows me to give only as much as i need.

do you do a sliding scale or count carbs? both of these things have helped me a lot to figure out the best dosing for me.

good luck.

Mare,
I Have been on Humulin NPH for years now. I think the best way to deal with the lows and highs is to know when the insulin starts working and when it peaks and of coarse when it starts to taper off. Knowing this info can help you to know just when to eat , and when you have to eat. For example........ I take my insulin around 10:am. I know by noon it has started working pretty well so i make sure to have lunch or a snack around that time ( to avoid low sugars) . The insulin peaks around 5 - 6 pm so thats when i have my dinner or a snack because thats when the insulin is working its hardest and i need to make sure there is something for it to actually work on to avoid low blood sugars. The insulin is working its weakest at night so i make sure my nighttime snacks are mostly protein and little carbs so i dont get high blood sugars. I also take some Humulin Regular insulin ( fast acting) around dinner time because i eat a lot of carbs for dinner ( I LOVE mashed potatoes)and need that extra boost of insulin to keep them from going too high. Now of coarse this takes time for you to get into a routine and know which foods do what in terms of raising your blood sugar or not raising it too much. I hope this all made sense.........
