I was diagnosed with CFRD over a year ago and my BF seems to think that you can't have Diabetes 1 and 2? Can u have both or is he for some strange reason right? And if you can how do I convince him that you can. I am not taking any meds for my CFRD, it's kinda diet controlled.

How about saying its CFRD which isnt EXACTLY like either. It has characteristics & treatments similar, but do to the CF must be handled differently.

CFRD was kind of described to me as a "third" kind of diabetes, not really type one or 2, with it's own issues that don't fit into the typical diabetes management program. And yes, even the diabetes doctors don't get it at my hospital. My nurse told me that if I required more than the Prandin pill that I am on, that they would send me to the endocrinologist, but to be prepared that he would probably still say stuff about diet, etc. that didn't apply to me, since we don't fit into the "box" that they are used to working in <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> .

Well i guess you could say heres insulin dependent and non-insulin dependent. Generally type 1 is considered insulin dependent and type 2 is non-insulin dependent. We who have cf-related diabetes can actually be a bit of both i would imagine , depending on how much we eat. When i was doagnosed with diabetes 28 years ago type 1 was considered diabetes mellitus or juvenille diabetes, and type 2 was considered adult- onset. Even cf centers didnt call it Cf-related diabetes back then . It took a while till that term came about, and now in the cf community it is readily used. Yes cf- related diabetes is a bit different than the other two forms basically only in the reasoning that we can not control it by diet alone. We need the extra calories, fat, carbs etc. and most of us cover it with insulin. A regular endocronologist would get very wide eyed to hear how much and what we consume in a day and manage to figure it all in and still maintain half decent blood sugar control.
