cipro and stomach misery

Has anyone else had GI problems with cipro? Ugh, the side effects are worse than the sinus infection. Any suggestions?

Ahhh yes. Cipro is one of my most hated meds. I have to make sure I'm not in class, or not working for the entire two weeks I'm on it because the GI problems are bad enough without the Cipro... just from the CF. But yes, when I go on Cipro I have some serious diarrhea the entire time I take the damn med.

I've found that 2 things help the GI upset caused by Cipro (for me). 1 - always take it on a full stomach. The docs say "with food", but if I take it before my stomach is actually full of food, I'm sick for half a day. 2 - take tons of Acidophilus. You can't take too much of it and it's pretty easy to find at health food stores or sections of the grocery. Make sure that the Acidophilus is enteric coated so that it survives the stomach acids and that it is kept in the refridgerator at the store. Kepp it refridgerated at home as well (it is a live bacteria that needs to be kept cool in order to stay effective). Yogurt has some acidophilus in it. It helps replace the good bacteria in your gut that strong antibiotics kill along with the bad. Hope that might help you.

It says on my Cipro to take it on an empty stomach (1 hour before meals or 2 hours after a meal). I have never had side effects from Cipro.

I'm on Cipro and Trimel right now, and i wonder if its causing the problems that i'm having. Im currently having trouble eating foods, and my appitite is really bad. While eating I get the feeling of nausea and it has me conserned. Do you think this is an anti biotic symtoms?

Try taking one antibiotic out of the regime for a few days and see if anything changes. If so, there is the answer. If not, try it with the second medication (probably for a week, not just a few days-on both of them). If you find that it is one of them giving you a problem, you really need to go back to your doctor. There are always alternatives to the medications the Rx.

Hi, This is Kathy, Coll's Mom. I think that calcium interferes with how well Cipro works and may cause stomach upset if ingested too close to when you take Cipro. I don't remember the exact recommendations, but you may wish to check with your doc about this.

Good Luck, Kathy

I am soooo frusterated with Cipro, too! It seems to be the drug of choice for when I start coughing alot and I CAN NOT tolerate it! I get nasaua(sp), terrible direhea and loss of appetite. I have taken a drug callled COMPAZINE with it and it really helps with nasaua, so anyone might want to ask their doc about that.
