Clean outs

I'm sorry if this is a question that has been asked before, but I've been wondering about it for awhile now. When you guys talk about going into the hospital for "clean-out's"--what does this mean? What all do you have to do, and for how long? Is it a yearly thing? Thanks for the info.

I know when I was younger I had yearly 'tune-ups" which is the same really as a clean out. I was put in the hospital whether I was reall sick and needing it or not. My docs did this in an effort to keep my as healthy as possible. Like Mockingbird said it usually consisted of a 2 week hospital stay with IVs or home IV treatment with more frequent and aggressive CPT. Sometimes I still call my sick visits to the hospital tune ups because that is what I am so used to, but I look at it like this ...

You can go in the hospital to treat an infection once your body has started to just break down and kind of get "repaired"

OR

You can go in for maintenance and just get a "tune-up" (oil change/tire rotation) what have you.

The only thing I have to add is that some use it as a preventative as not to allow the CFer to decline too much before intervening & some use it as a response to a decline. For me personally unless I am having an actual exacerbation, I dont go in.....never seemed to work like its suppose to otherwise!

Thanks guys, I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop with my granddaughter. I'm so thankful that I'm not going into this cold, and ignorant, like I was before I found you all. You're my inspiration!

in one of the scandnavian countries, can't remember which, crfers go in to hospital 4 times a year for a "clear out" whether they are feeling off or not, iv'e posted this before and i was surprised nobody was shocked by it i hate it when joe goes in , it's odd, he does not look ill although he obviously is. all the other parents moan on and on and on and they are never there for more than 2 or 3 days. arghhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Basically what everyone else said. You go in at least for a few days, end up on a 2 week round of IVs. Sometimes you stay the whole time, sometimes you go home and do home IVs (a preference of mine). It's not usually on a set schedule, at least not in my experience. Just kind of when it seems like it might be of use. I myself do not go in unless I'm having an actual problem, exacerbated cough, significant loss of weight, etc.

mockingbird, maybe there is something in what they do, would be interesting to find out what their average life expectency is compared to elsewhere.
