Cleaning Nebs

I Cleaning Nebs

The only time I've ever used vinegar was before washing in soapy water, rinsing and boiling on the stove for 10 minutes. And the reason I used vinegar was because our water softener wasn't working very efficiently and we'd get calcium deposits on the nebs, which would clog them. We've since gotten a new softener.
When DS was diagnosed over 7 years ago, the head RT was giving us instructions on neb cleaning and mentioned that they used to recommend vinegar, but that's no longer the case.

We wash with hot, soapy water, rinse, then boil for 10 minutes. Air dry on paper towels. Vinegar is not recommended anymore by the CFF. The Pari nebs boil fine. BUT, if you forget about them and let the water boil away, they will MELT into a big plastic plate, with a blue part in it!

Take care!

We boil the nebs for 10 minutes. We don't wash them prior to boiling as it makes sense for the boiling to be sufficient in removing residue in addition to sterilizing. Am I wrong? We boil prior to each use...we only neb Pulmozyme.

Tobi can be really, really sticky. So I rinse right after using. Wash all the nebs in soapy water and then boil for 10 minutes. I've had a couple nebs clog up because they got left out.

So far we use only 5 % NaCl so rinsing after use removes the residue well. But I'll remember to wash after use when we start using Tobi or other medicals, afetr use and perhaps boil before use again.

Heh Katie,

Just fyi, at our last cf family education day, a pharmacist got up and did a speech on neb cleaning. They actually did a test to see what/if there was still germs/bacteria on the nebs.
1. Just rinsing had the most still on it
2. Rinsing then boiling for 10 minutes still had some
3. Washing with hot, soapy water, then boiling for 10 minutes had almost nothing on it

So, now, we do all the steps. Ugghh! Takes longer but I guess in the long run it's worth it!

Take care,
