Cleaning Products

When I use cleaning products like Pledge, Magic Bubbles, well anything really...I sneeze, cough, SOB, itch and/or get a headache to the point I hate to clean and will put it off as long as possible. These side effects can be bad enough I have to take a shower just to stop itching and sneezing...even if I clean just one small piece of furnature. I cleaned just my headboard with Pledge and I am itching like crazy. I guess I am allergic to something, but I dont know what it is. I cant seem to get an allergy test. I requested one from my CF Center but they said unless I am looking to get allergy shots, I dont need one. And since I am in the process of getting a house, I want to be able to keep it clean but if this happens everytime I know I wont do it like I should. This isnt a new, overnight problem. It has been like this for years. Can anyone recommend any cleaning product that is better on breathing or hypoallergenic? Thanks.

Try looking for some "green" cleaning supplies...like those from Seventh Generation and see if that helps. Also, you can use things like baking soda, vinegar, etc. to clean without all of the chemicals. About the allergies--you may be allergic to dust, which is what you are reacting to instead of the cleaner. I disagree that the only reason that you would get an allergy test is if you want to get allergy shots. There are lots of options for treating allergies, but often the first step is knowing what you are allergic too. I do get allergy shots, but tried other things before we went there.

So I would suggest contacting an allergist (not your clinic) about getting a skin test done and then go from there.

It happens even when I am cleaning the bathroom sinks, that is why I am thinking it is more than dust, its something in the products. I'm sure I might be allergic to dust, wouldnt suprise me. I will get SOB, as well, when cleaning. Therefore I leave cleaning the bathroom (where most of the chemicals are used) to my fiance. I do the rest, but I wear a mask and gloves just to be on the safe side.

I have never done an allergy test, but if you think that's what will help, go for it!

It depends on your insurance. My old insurance required it, but my new insurance doesn't...I just called and made an appointment.

I heard something recently about some cleaning products effecting lung functions...there are a lot of natural products out there and a lot of times baking soda will work just as well!

I switched to using almost all environmental friendly/non-toxic cleaners and I do not miss that chemcially smell!

I read something about air fresheners lowering lung functions (para- somethings in them?) and was going to post about it, but I don't know where the article was. Anybody else see that? I'd like to find air fresheners that don't have that in them...

I'd insist on the allergy tests, too- I found out I was allergic to feathers, and had been sleeping under a goosedown comforter for years!<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif" border="0"> Getting rid of that has helped with how I feel when I get up in the morning <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> . Also, I found out what pollens and molds I am allergic to, so I know when to take my antihistamines, and to have sudafed on hand, which helps considerably with my sinus/lung issues <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> .

Not helpful unless you're planning on having shots? Pppthhhhh! (pardon LOL) Tell them you want a referal, and don't take no for an answer. Also, if you have a general practitioner, or an ENT, etc., they can refer you <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> .

I had a test when I was young but I'm guessing like everything else in life, things change so I would like to know if there is anything new or am I still allergic to the same things. I think back then I was only allergic to a certain type of grass. I would get itchy all over, sneezing, coughing when I was exposed to that grass (which we later realized was in the yard, I dont cut grass or go out while someone cuts it), kinda like I am with the cleaners that's why I was wondering if there might me something I'm allergic to in them.

Anyway, continue with the tips and suggestions <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> I appreciate it.
