Cleaning the Eflow

Hello all-
In the European Journal of CF this year, there was an article high-lighting the inconsistencies in instructions for cleaning and sterilizing the the Eflow unit.

If you go to the source cf website they say there is no need to remove the head from the med cup.....what? My pharmacy, IV Solutions, tells me to put the head in alcohol after each use.....even saying if it gets slow, put it in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner with alcohol.

The source cf site says to use a hospital grade germicidal and then rinse the neb cup and head in tap water...WTF? There are so many problems with tap water I dont even know where to begin. For one, the particles can clog the head.....and of course, sooooo many bugs grow in tap water. IV Solutions says alcohol and then rinse with sterile water (boiled distilled water cooled to room temp)....

what do they tell you to do?

I think this needs to be addressed pronto....I think I will give Preston C a call tomorrow.

I have ALWAYS used tap water with my eflow and other nebs. I think that if you boil it/ put it in alcohol that will cause the plastic to break down and thus leaking.

I boil usually once a week and my neb cups last me the full six months (or longer) that they are supposed to. For traditional neb cups, I rinse with just tap water after every use...then like I said, boil once a week. With the eflow (which I ONLY use for aztreonam, b/c I am in the study) I use tap water and non antibacterial soap. I wash the metal head first, rinse with tap water (my tap water gets VERY hot) and then let it air dry. Then I do the same with all of the other pieces. That is what the study company told me to do (not that they are the only ones that know it all) but I have NEVER had a problem with the eflow leaking at all.

My instructions were distilled water and then alcohol for the aerosol head. And non-anti-bacterial soap and warm tap water for the plastic parts.

So that's what I do.

I throw my plastic parts in the dishwasher after every use , as they reach the temp that the CFF states for killing PA. I don't spend hours every day doing meds just to have bacteria grow on my neb pieces in between use.

I rinse my e-head off with distilled water then throw it in alcohol like Em said. Alcohol kills PA. I boil the e-head once a week just for sh!ts and giggles.
