Ok so....I moved here from BC about 2 yrs ago, I lived there for 27 yrs. Then I moved to Ontario in 2004. B4 mov ing to Ontario I was lucky if I had a cold sore outbrake every 3 yrs....now that I have moved to Ontario I get outbrakes every 2-3 months, and they are always on my mouth(lip area) or in/under my nose. Can moving from BC to Ontario be the reason why I am getting so many outbrakes...change in weather, climate, stuff like that. So does anyone have any idea why I'm getting more and more outbrakes since I've moved to Ontario??? Right now I am taking Zovriax cream and applying it 2-3 times per day as needed on my lips. Any help or suggestions will greatly be appreciated.....

Thank you

I am not sure why the break outs are more often, but have you ever taking L-Lysene (not sure how to spell lysene) for cold sores?

Anytime we would get a cold sore my mom would make us take one of these pills and it would clear up real fast.

You can get it at any drugstore over the counter.

I think colder weather could be a cause for cold sores. I have a habit of having cracked lips from the cold weather here in Manitoba, and its enivitable, that my cracked lips turn into cold sores in the corners of my mouth. You should try L-Lysene. I took it for a while for cold sores, and while I was on it, I didn't get one.

i don't get cold sores myself and i don't know a whole lot about them but thought i would throw this out there just incase it may help... a friend of mine told me once he was pretty sure stress would cause his to reoccur more often or lack of sleep and a number of other things...can't really remember... he told me one time that i made one rear its ugly head because he and i drove to st. louis to visit a friend of ours and i made him drive the entire 10 hours back home because i had a headache and needed to shut my eyes... anyway he told me the stress of the drive in the heavy traffic caused it... guess what i'm getting at is maybe it is some new stress in your life like traffic, not sleeping as well in a new environment, not knowing many people around you, a new clinic/doctor, etc.

just throwing that out there might help, might not...

Well, I'll tell you what happened to me. I met this lady on a CF forum by the name of "Allie", we spent some time together a few nights, and then out of the blue I have "cold sores". I also have them on my naughty bits, what does this mean?

Taking L-Lysine on a regular basis helps keep cold sores away. And if you do get it just up the pills to at least twice a day. You can also use Differin cream which works really good too! Gotta get an RX for that though. Good Luck

Monolaurin has also been shown to stop herpe outbreaks (cold sores are in the herpes family), it takes a while, and fairly strong daily doses, but it can work in the end. It also keeps viruses and bacteria at bay.

Cold sores...I hate them! I'm not sure if they are CF related or not. They seem to run in my family with non-CF members. I get them when I start getting sick or under stress (eg. exam time in college). I just got over some. I have taken Zovriax (sp?) before, I hated using it. I just started to use L-Lysine pills with my last cold sore, seems to work pretty good. I take two on the first day, when I feel it coming on. One everyday after that until it is gone. I also use Campho-Phenique to put on the cold sores. CP make a gel you can put on 2-3 times a day. I use the liquid version, it seems to stay on better. You apply the liquid in the morning and before bed with a q-tip. You can get L-Lysine pills and Campho-Phenique at drug or department stores. Hope this helps.

i would say the change is most definitly related to stress rather than your new location. keep in mind that stress can be caused by a lot of things -- change itself can even be stressful.

try the l-lysine. if that doesn't work and you are really frustrated, you can try acyclovir (brand name Valtrex) an anti-viral medicine.

I'm not sure why you are having more cold sores, but my daughter with cf also gets them quite frequently, usually while under stress from being in the hospital and missing school. She uses Abreva which heals them in about 3 days. A bit pricey but well worth it as they are gone in three days. Good luck. Snow.

My husband didn't have trouble with cold sores, but he did with shingles (caused by the chickenpos virus if you've already had chickenpox).

My understanding is that they are both apt to kick in when your immune system is weakened. (say from fighting off another infection or from being on steroids).
