Colistin Question

I took my first Colistin treatment this morning. I've already had
some chest tightness, which the albuterol seemed to help, but
should I expect it to get worse over time, or typically, will the
worst side effects come right away. (I've never taken colistin
before)<br>

For those who have had to stop taking it, how does the
bronchospasm/chest tightness manifest itself. Does it come on worse
over time or right away?<br>

I am no longer using colistin, but I did experience chest tightness
with it initially. Usually with a new med the body can react in
such a way because of it's unfamiliarity with the chemicals. I
would encourage you to keep at it and be sure to do it at the same
time each day to achieve maximum benefits. Don't give up just
yet--give your body some time to get used to it and work with your
doctor to determine whether it's the right treatment for you.

I also had chect tightness with it. Then my doctor suggested i use my albuterol inhaler right before using the colistin, so i tried that and it did help. I wound up stopping the use of colistin since it seemed to not work for me. It works really well for some, maybe you'll be one of them <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

LOL~ That's awesome that you posted this on your blog after I posted the correct order as per my clinic! Thanks! I agree with colistin it is very important to nebulize albuterol (or xopenex) first. It just opens up your lungs and relieves most "asthma" symptoms.

When I first started colistyn, they wanted me to do my first treatment in the office (just like HS), cause for some bronchospasms can get really dangerous. Colistyn just doesn't work for some.

I tried Colistin a few times, and I had to stop taking it because my chest would sieze up on me. I know that some people can't take it due to the bronchial spasms. It seemed that the longer I took it, the worse my chest got, to the point where I took myself off of it, and told my doc to put me on TOBI because I couldn't do Tobra either.

I was on it for 2 weeks at the beggining of August and went
through pretty much the same symptoms tightness at the beggining
with lttle cough, it was worse for the night time treatments,
gradually getting worse until it was taking 2 albuteral treatments
two make the symptoms just tolerable.

I'm a little surprised that so many people are having a reaction to
this drug.  I was never told about spasms or anything of the
sort by my doc.  Luckily, I haven't had any, either.  My
only complaint with colistin is that I have to mix it every other
day, and it gets so frothy.  Other than that, my experience
using it has been good.<br>

Like everyone else has said, though, make sure you do colistin last
out of all your nebs.  I'm sure the albuterol does help.

Mix a batch a day or two in advance and put it in the fridge. That's what I used to do, and it barely if ever frothed up.

I was on coliston and it made me short of breath, so I had my doc take me off of it, and put me on Tobi. I havent been on coliston ever since.

Things were better today. But I coughed a lot. Hopefully that means
the medicine is working.<br>
