Collapsed lung

I had my first collapse May 10th then again June 8th; at that time my doctor consulted with some other doctors and they decided that doing a pleurodesis could be beneficial and help prevent further collapses. Unfortunately, even with the surgery, I just got another one on Friday (27th). All of them have occured in the right lung.
I was wondering if anyone else has ever had problems with recurences of collapsed lungs and if it ever stopped?

I asked my RT about it once and he said that depending on the stage of the disease and how weakened your chest wall has become, you may be more prone to them after having it once. It just depends on the individual. Some people have it happen once and never have it again.

I haven't had one myself, but here's a link to an article about pneumothorax and CF.

I'm sorry you are having so much trouble.

I had a collasped lung on April 25. Also on my right side (I read in a CF book that they happen more often on the patient's most problematic side...I've always had trouble with my right side). It was very painful. They placed a chest tube in. It was there for about a week, then it got infected so it had to be pulled with a sliver at the top still down. My doctor told me there was a chance that it could collaspe again because we had to pull the chest tube before all the air was out, but more likely the air would go away over time. I went to my CF doc in June and the xray showed that it had completely healed (thank god). It has not collaspe again (knock on wood). I hope I never experience that again. But I will admit that everytime I have the slightest chest pain, I am afraid that it might happen again. My CF doc did tell me things to not do (like holding my breath while exercising or lifting objects, swimming/holding my breath underwater...basically anything that would increase pressure in my lungs over any extended period of time) so I would not increase my risk of it happening again.

Maybe your docs are pulling your chest tube too soon? I hope the cycle stops and you get feeling better soon. Good luck.
