Cost of LifeTime CF care?

Has anyone ever been told an "expected medical cost" of treating CF for a lifetime? Estimates? What is the average cost of a lung transplant? Just curious as we try to plan for Aidan's future. Thanks.

I hope you won´t have to pay the medical costs, but store some money for an appartement/house/car, things everyone with cf will need some day and might not be able to earn the money himself...

that is some great advice. something my parents never did even though they had the money to do so. they knew i would never be able to afford those things myself yet they did jack sht about it. they decided to keep the money for themselves and blow it on stupid things.

Good question, but I don't have the answer. I read somewhere the cost to raise any child to the age of 18 is in excess of $200,000 and I'm quite certain that a child with CF, even with good health insurance is going to be well beyond that. This year alone in co-pays has changed our living. And we have great insurance and decent salaries. And this is only the beginning. So thanks for making me think more about how much CF sucks!! : )

The closest I can give you without researching is that some people have a lifetime max on their insurance and worry about reaching that even when the CFer is fairly young. It is something that is hard to grasp even for us who know the high cost of CF care. Now do that 1000 fold for those oblivious to healthcare costs in general...........scary!

I've never been told any expected cost, but I can tell you that my parents were both working, and my mother is employed by the government with a great healthcare plan. Even with that, we weren't really hurting for money, but we could rarely take any vacations or have any other luxuries of the sort. There wasn't a whole lot left by the time the hospital bills and copays were taken care of. That's why it was such a blessing when I got my SSI and Medicaid. Things are much easier on the family now.

As far as transplant costs? Let's put it this way. My mother's insurance would require a 10% copay. That alone is $10,000 (if I'm correct, which I'm pretty sure I am). My advice? Make sure your health insurance is as good as you can get, and start saving up finances now!
