Cough, cough, cough

Maggie has a upper resp bug. Started coughing a little Tuesday, stayed home from school today and yesterday and has a harsh cough. Lungs sound good and clear. Increased the VEST and nebs. Definately a viral thing. Just not sure if I should call the CF doc tomorrow for an oral antibiotic or so how the weekend goes. What do you think? maggie want to go to school tomorrow, too; but I'm not keen on it. Maybe 1/2 day if anything. When should I call the doc?

Rebecca, I think that this is one of the most challenges things about being a parent of a child with CF...when do we need more intervention?! I did ask this question recently at clinic. My girls CF dr. told us that if there is a change in the norm for two weeks, then to call. He said that it can take two weeks for a lot of virus' to clear.
I can't say that I always do that though. Sometimes I might let it go that long, depending on the cough and other symptoms they are having. But other times I call after about one week.
This is a tough call. But it sounds like you are doing al the right things though...increased VEST and nebs and letting her stay home for extra rest<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Tammy ,Thanks for your reply. Alot of times I do wait; and call the CF doc over the phone and he'll prescribe something over the phone. I made an appointment for tomorrow with maggie's regular pediatrician , cause she ran a low grade temp tonight and last night. I figure he can look in her ears(pretty sure it's not that) Also, There is a pertussis outbreak in our county so I want to make sure it's not something crazy like that. Her cough sounds pretty harsh...but I think it is in her throat, upper airway stuff. I may have her ped call her CF doc to check about oral antibiotics. I would usually do all this stuff over the phone, but the low grade temp threw me off as well as hearing there has been a pertussis outbreak .

Usually if DS gets a fever with cough, I'll call. His doctor prefers there be no cough and not waiting. I skip the local doctors because I always get the lungs are clear, just a virus and later have gone to the cf doctor and have been told that we should've called a lot sooner.

As far as pertussis, someone at Max's daycare got it and the kids were all put on abx. Max's doctor put him on zithromax -- this was when he was 14 months, prior to being put on zithromax on a daily/every other day basis. So if she's on that, one would think it would offer some protection.
