Anyone have some magically cure for not vomiting while coughing.. Last night was such a pain in the neck.. I was coughing so hard I just kept throwing up... Doesn't make for a restful nights sleep.

I can't tell if it is post nasal cough/sinus or what but it stinks... even if I surpress my cough it makes me vomit..

Any ideas?

This happens to me sometimes too, especially if I'm coughing really hard after I've just eaten. In fact, would you believe one of my best friends actually thought I was bulimic because this was happening so often?! Anyway, if I can stop coughing long enough, I try to just keep swallowing over and over until the vomit sensation goes away. Then I try not to cough for a few minutes after that to make sure that gag reflex has truly left. The other thing, and I think this is most important, is to really focus your mind on calming your body. For me I get sort of emotionally worked up when this happens and as the frustration builds it seems my vomiting gets worse! So I really try to just take some deep breaths (ha ha, if I CAN) and think calm thoughts. Sounds corny, I know, but it really does work. I cannot say enough about using the power of your mind to control physical things like this. When you're doing the deep breaths, breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.

I am sorry this is happening to you...it really is a pain in the a$$. I am not sure what works only that the coughing stops. Last time I had a really bad coughing spell (it lasted for over an hour), I vomited a huge amount of phlegm and what felt like my lung. It was terrible...the only thing that stopped it was when I finally nebulized lidocaine (mind you, I have a trach so the med went to my lungs directly bypassing my mouth so my lungs were the only thing that numbed up). I do hope that you find something that relieves your cough before you get to that vomiting stage. Hugs, Jenn

Ooos, I just read how you vomited even when the coughing wasn't there. That will teach me to reply before I absorb the whole post! Maybe it is post nasal drip..do you take anything for that? I too have that issue and take allergy meds along with Flonase. I believe that my doc wants to add another drug for my sinuses too. What Wheezie said was good advice too..to try and remain as calm as possible. Not easy when you are in a full blown coughing fit and getting bronchospastic, but it does help. Hugs...Jenn
