Coughing up blood

The route I normally go is antibiotics and extra vitamin K. My doctor sees it as a sign that something is brewing down there and getting out of hand. I can typically get away with a phone call, but if it's more than a few tablespoons of blood I'm going to the ER. If he can't decide how much blood there is, then I would at LEAST call the doc and see what their course of action would be.

If I remember right this isnt "normal" for him which means he really needs to contact the doctor......

For those of us with long histories we tend to know the whys....often its triggered by something and its not always an infection.

From experience since it seems to be a bit worse when he has the kids that lifting, playing etc with the kids might be aggrivating the issue which IMHO needs addressing.

As far as what to do until he gets to the doctor.....drink cold/ice water, take Vitamin K (presuming he has it) & if got bad enough put ice packs on the his chest. We are told to hold off on treatments until we are blood free for 24 hours or at least the more irritating ones like Pulmozyme.

I hope its something simple....

I always just contacted my doctor and told him how much it was. Normally if it was more than a quarter cup at a time, there is reason for concern. Before the transplants, I had 6 embolizations (going in and blocking what was bleeding) over the course of about 5 years. It is not something that you want to let go. If blood sits in the lungs it is a breading ground for bacteria (like our lungs aren't anyway....right) and he could get a pretty nasty infection.

My first bleed...I faced the fact, told the wife and we spent the next day at the hospital where I had gotten more than one CT scan done.

The doc said he could determine by the CT whether anything major had been damaged, or where the cause was...
So, getting immediate attention for Mark would be advisable. Since, like my case, it is rare, it should also be investigated before it gets to be a problem in the future.

General train of thought...a large amount of blood loss from coughing is not normal for anyone...even more alarming for CF patients...it would be advisable for him to investigate the cause and treatment..IMHO...

Hope he does it and won't ignore it...take care, both of you! (Ok, All five of you! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> )
