Hi All,

I can't tell you how happy I am to have found this website. As a mom to a newly diagnosed son, I have many, many questions and don't always know who to turn to. I appreciate anyone who will take the time to answer a question of mine... I am sure there will also be MANY more in the future!

My son Logan (DDF508) was diagnosed at 2 1/2 months. He was not showing any of the respitory signs of cf, but our pediatrician reccomended he be tested because he was not gaining weight and failing to thrive. We are thankful for her being so proactive.

A couple weeks after he was diagnosed, he was hospitalized because MRSA showed up in his culture. We stayed in the hospital for two weeks of IV treatment, and he seemed to be on the right track. Every time a doctor would come in to listen to his lungs, they said he sounded "great".

Now it is a couple months later, and I know that cf kids are going to cough more than the norm, but when do you know if it is something more serious than them just clearing out their lungs. He used to cough just a few times a day, but now he seems to be doing it a bit more and I am just worried that we may be missing something. We live pretty far from our CF center so I just thought I would ask you all before I contact his specialists...

Thank you so much for any advice you have to give to a new mom.

I was told that you should have a guage of their baseline and any increase in cough that lasts more than 2 days warrants a call to the CF center. My daughter's baseline is "no cough" at all, and she's two and a half. I believe as they get older that baseline will inevitably change. If you've noticed an increase in cough, call the CF center. Usually ours will call in an oral abx first, and if it doesn't kick the cough (within about 10-15 days) than we go in and get cultured.

CF exacerbations aren't always hit-you-in-the-face obvious, so its probably a good idea to check with them if you notice something changing.

Welcome to the site. I'm sure you will find lots of advice and support from those of us who have been there and are there. (((HUGS)))

Megan,
First of all... welcome to the site. It is an unfortunate circumstance that brings us all together. But the people on this site are a very caring and informative group of people.

Secondly, Congratulations on the baby! Do you have any other children? I hope you are enjoying your new bundle of joy!

Lastly, if you are noticing a change in his cough, I agree that you should contact your CF clinic. We have called before about our daughter and they asked us to describe her cough. The sound of it and frequency. They also asked if it was waking her up at night or if she was coughing while eating. Based on the answers they can tell alot.

Plus you are very new at this. In the beginning we called our clinic often. Being new parents we did not know what was normal and what wasn't. Your clinic should be understanding and helpful no matter what you call about. It never hurts to ask them what they think.

hi megan,
i remember when blake would get a cough when he was little, and i would get asked from his dr. all these questions about what sort of cough it was. was it wet, dry moist etc etc. and to tell you the truth i found it hard to know what they were talking about sometimes. you will get more confident in what is "normal" and not for your bubs, but if you see any change give the cf clinic a call. if it is nothing thats great, but if it isn't then you can get him the treatment he needs.
soon enough you will be a doctor, nurse, dietician, physiotherapist and chemist all rolled in to one lol.
good luck
