Thank you everyone for your kind words, support and information. It helps to know much as possible. I guess we will find out which strain he has after the bronchoscopy.

YES cepacia has a much worse reputation. I am not that familiar with it, but from what I understand Cepaica has different "classes" and one of those classes is the worst to get. Some people have lived with Cepacia for years and others have passed within a short time after culturing it.

I'm so sorry for all you are dealing with. I don't know a whole lot about cepacia, except that I'm afraid of it!! As a parent it is so difficult to see your child go through any misery. I know we'd all take on the pain and sickness to alleviate theirs. I'm so sorry about your mom, you really do have a lot of awful things going on right now. All I can do is send big cyber hugs and let you know that I'm sorry.

Chippie,

Make sure they send the specimen to the speciatly lab in Minnesota. Every hospital I have been too has mislabeled one of my bacteria as Cepacia. I actually grow some crazy bug that my doc had never heard of but from what he can tell has not been documented to have a negative prognosis at all? Anyway, just a thought.

One more thing..why are they doing a bronch, just to get a bronchial washing? Is is a CF clinic you go too?

Just FYI: It depends on what you are reading because in prior years what is now known as Burkholderia Cepacia was PREVIOUSLY classified as Pseudomonas Cepacia. Many in micro field and those who dont know better will still refer to BC as pseudomonas cepacia therefore leading to the confusion with pseudomonas aero

The doctor said he wants to do a bronchoscope so he can get a sample of the lung tissue. He wants to make sure there wasn't any cross contamination. As for the pseudomonas/cepacia, he was diagnosed with PA last year, and ther was no mention of cepacia, so I do not think it is cepacia related. All I know is, since my son was born, we have been told the cepacia is the worst bacteria he could get in his lungs. And now 12 years later he has it. It terrifies me to think of his future.
