Diabetes and Surgery

I am having surgery on Monday (sinuses). They have scheduled my surgery for 7:30am (in pre-op by 6). I have CFRD-- and lots of low blood sugar issues.

I am a bit freaked that my sugars will plummet on the morning of the surgery (stress causes my sugars to fall very quickly and I will be super stressed out).

Any one with CRFD, specifically those who struggle with low blood sugar, have surgery lately?? How did they manage your sugars pre surgery and after surgery (and even during surgery)??

The last time I had surgery (16 years ago) I didn't have CRFD and never had this concern looming over me.

I had gestational diabetes/CFRD for almost my entire pregnancy. When I went in to be induced, they hooked me up to an iv of glucose and monitored my sugars frequently. If they started getting too low, they upped the glucose drip and if they started rising they switched to just a normal saline drip. I'm guessing that's what they'll do as soon as you get to the hospital.

Hope this helps...Good luck with your surgery!!

Well I have minor surgery next week for breaking up a kidney stone. They tell me not to eat or drink anything the night before to the surgery, so I'm not worried the least about my blood sugars. If I don't eat they stabilize by themselves.
